When I was a little kid, I was dxed with ADHD. I had severe impulse control problems, interrupted the teacher, severe tantrums everyday in the classroom until I was 16!!! My grandma refused meds though, so I went untreated, maybe best because it could have been childhood bipolar.
Anyway, despite all my problems, I had no learning difficulties! In fact, I learned faster than the other kids! I heard something once and remembered it, I didn't used to study, even in college I didn't study much (annoyed my roommates, lol). They told me if I wasn't Severely Emotionally Disturbed, I could have skipped grades. In High School, I was in honors courses part of the day, and Special Ed the rest of the day to try to manage my behavior. I would have been straight A's, if only I wasn't such a bad speller and didn't understand the concepts very well in English class, I don't know why I had problems with that. I can learn, but my over emotionality and bipolar keeps me from succeeding in life (seriously, I don't have problems with OCD! I'm getting that overturned, being eccentric is not OCD, I've been reading about that.) Anyone else like this? Or am I truly alone....

I, too, was considered gifted, although my ADHD did not hit until I was nineteen so no problems in school as a youngster..
I am getting my master's of education to become a teacher, that way I can help people but still constantly move around! I was fired from many, many jobs until I found teaching!! Also I waitressed at a small family diner that was the first job not to fire me due to my eccentricity. they built up my confidence and adored me!! ![]() Pm me anytime- we have a lot in common ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was psychotic as a child and they thought I had adhd. I remember one time a voice told me to scream at the teacher and throw a tantrum so I did. I didn't know the things I experienced were any different from the other kids so I never really said anything.
I was put on drugs and put in special classes yet I got straight A's and never had any problem learning. I was taken off drugs and mostly taken out of the classes when I was about 12 but as I got older the bipolar schizoaffectice stared kicking in. I always had schizoaffective tendencies even while I was on meds as a child. My mother always called me psycho and threatened to put me in a mental hospital. I was basically labeled handicapped by the school system the whole time but when my IQ and brain waves were tested I was called genius by doctors. Needless to say I was VERY bitter about the whole thing and still am. I think the reason I have a lot of self esteem problems now is because of my experiences with being basically labeled retarded for most of my life and trying but failing to fight the system. It was pointless for me to graduate high school because I was still under the umbrella of "emotionally handicapped" and it would have gone into my records... I really did not want that. |

My daughter is similar to that. She was dx last March with ADHD. She is very bright, she gets what is being taught and doesn't want to linger on it. Unfortunately, her lack of doing her work in a timely manner is showing on her grades. She is in 3rd grade now. She started kindergarted reading at an end of year level, stayed way above the reading level through 1st grade. By the start of 2nd grade the rest of the kids were catching up, by the end of 2nd they had passed her. She doesn't like to read, she has the thought that since she knows how to do it, why bother doing it anymore.
I have also been told, by her first T, that she is emotionally delayed. She has the emotional reactions of a toddler. She is learning to deal with her emotions, but still has a long way to go before she is at her age level emotionally. I initially decided to not medicate her. I wanted her to learn coping strategies first. Since her grades have started slipping, I have decided to try meds to see if her grades will turn around.

Have you been tested for other learning disabiltiies? Poor spelling is a red flag for dyslexia. Many gifted people are dyslexic. At any rate, you do have gifts....those of us who are outside the box usually have a hard time finding our place. Best of luck. You are definitely not alone--you just haven't found your niche yet. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I could always read several grades ahead of my grade, I just couldn't spell for some reason.
