I experience apathy on a daily basis.
This past Christmas, I didn't shop or wrap a single present. Today (Easter) I didn't make my kid's Easter baskets, and I think they are sad about it, but it really doesn't bother me. I can sit and do nothing and be perfectly content. I really think it's a side effect to my Effexor xr.but I don't want to add any meds to counteract it. I miss doctors appointments, because of it. How do you guys handle apathy, if it affects you?

Hello, sun_flower. I handle apathy by doing something. Any simple think will do. I hope the doing acts as a primer to keep me doing things.

Sun_flower, isn't it strange how depression acts differently in different people? I find that I can't sit still rather than being apathetic. I just want to cry alot. Do you want to cry?
Having kids is a good thing for you to get out there and be active. I tend to draw energy from my kids when I'm down...

I struggle immensely with apathy and lack of motivation and I am not even currently depressed. I wish I knew how to become motivated to do basic things.

Apath is the pits, I agree Sun Flower. I like TheByzantine's help. Just do something, anything and let it act as a primer.
Let's prime our pumps with sunflower seeds and get moving. Sun and a short walk help me.

Now, on Effexor, I am pretty good about not wanting to cry, unless it's time for pms and that's a whole other story.

I hate it, I don't like being this way. I don't have any sense of urgency for anything anymore.

Why is apathy so prevalent when the well-being of the person is at stake? How do apathetics come to believe nothing can resolve the dilemma they face, instead
choosing to do nothing knowing exasperation of the problem is inevitable? What dispels the helplessness an apathetic learns? |
