My thoughts on the subject are: All the illnesses...mental and physical are terrible for the person suffering from the condition(s). There is no condition that is worse than another. To have an illness is awful period. Mental illness often causes the most fear because it is hard to see as compared to physical illnesses. However, mental illness can be treated much like physical illnesses with proper medication and therapy.

Thus the worst mental illness is to have one at all. That is what i think.

I'd say the worst mental illness to have is the untreated illness. Treatment might include medication, lifestyle changes, talk therapy, other therapy, recognition and acceptance of the condition, emotional support of self and from others -- but if it's a real illness, (and mental illnesses are real illness), then it deserves some kind of treatment. Having dealt with someone who had a serious, untreated mental illness, I'm going to say the worst mental illness is the untreated mental illness.

When I was in high school I was extremely anxious with anxiety and panic attacks and bpd. I was then severely abused by my first husband from the age of 20-25 and I dissociated a lot. The bpd become more severe however the panic attacks went away and I went into an extreme anxiety mode and did not leave the house for 3 months. My mind seemed to shatter. I exhibited numerous behaviours belonging to numerous disorders. Finally in the end I am now dx with bipolar I with extreme psychosis hallucinations/delusions/mania and bpd. I have been told that my pysychosis can move from a mood disorder into a thought disorder such as Schizophrenia very fast if left untreated.

So yes it is what the person has that makes it the worst for that person, but it can and does change over time for that person.

"He grabbed me and took all my clothes off and pushed me naked into our closet and started to the throw everything he could find at me laughing while I tried to get out. When he reached for the iron that was still plugged in I knew this was not going to end well..." exert from dairy 1993 Lara Patterson Richey

Each person is different and each MI affects each person somewhat differently. Some respond well to medication, others don't. You can need to be hospitalized for unmanaged MI of any one of those disorders.

I vote for the disorder that a person has that isn't managed...meaning it not only won't let you enjoy life, but threatens your life.

Add me to the list of people who didn't vote. IMHO it depends on the person involved.

this seems very unsupportive to me... imagine having schizophrenia and seeing all these people say its the worst

having an illness is having an illness... making a contest is really uncalled for

I don't think anyone meant to be unsupportive.

Hey, I have schizo/affective. It's pretty much schizophrenia, in my eyes.

At least thats what they "slapped" on me, I dunno if it's true.

If you don't like the discussion don't take part in it. It's that simple.

While I understand this thread and poll were posted with the best of intentions, it doesn't seem like there's going to be any one or "right" answer to such a question, given the variability not only in severity of symptoms across disorders, but how people experience them and what resources are available to them for help.
