grrr I zoomed out as far as I could, but when I try to read the talk boxes, the ones at the top are cut off (not in the screen area)
 I can't find a way to make the window larger.

I cant add myself because i am from Canada. It only shows the states.

It's not just for the US -- the whole world is markable.
I had to focus on one country for the initial display, otherwise with this many people, it looks like a big jumble of 'pins'. You can "ZOOM OUT" to see Canada, or type your city name in the box in the upper right to set the focus on your region.
