Yikes my computer died last night... that's why no posts from me. I think it was just my hard drive, I have two in my machine so I am just reinstalling the OS onto that drive to get me up and running for now.
This is a major interruption... with still being home from work from illness, no transportation to get out, still not comfortable on the phone... the internet and email are my only forms of communication to the outside world. Fortunately everything seems to be going OK so far... hey I got here already ![]() Hope to be better off later today, finished by next weekend.

I've been chugging along...
I do have a backup from about a week ago, so I should have everything important back once I'm finished reinstalling... Not that much lost anyway... the drive that died was my OS and applications, I have a separate hard drive where I store all my data and files so none of that stuff is gone... that's the drive I'm temporarily putting Windows on for now to get running again.

So the reinstall is going well, and I get to the point where I want to pull all of my email off of my backup. I think my email is really the only significant thing that I lost... as I said earlier, all of my data was on a different drive anyway.
My email has a lot of info and registrations that I need to continue, and also to make my machine "feel like home". So to start to restore from my backup, I have to reinstall my backup software. No problem. I start it up. It needs a license code to run. Also no problem. I am very organized (read "OCD") so I have all of these important codes on a printout in my drawer. Enter the code. Error message "this license code is for an earlier version" so I check through all of my stuff... both my lists on the hard drive and my printed list. No other codes saved. So you know where my license code for the backup software is? It is stored safely in my email, which is backed up. But I can't restore the backup without the code. I am a idiot. I emailed customer service to see if they can help me. Like Carrie, "They're all gonna laugh at me" ![]() Son of a B____!!!!!!!

You mean your code is in one of your email? Do you mean a regular email like something I would send you?
Just trying too understand so maybe I could help. time0 |

The license code was emailed to me by the company when I purchased the upgrade. I have the original disc for the older version, but the upgrade I only downloaded from their website after paying online.
So when I paid and downloaded, they sent me a new code in the email. Usually I copy this email to the same folder with the download for safe keeping, and update my list of codes with the new info. My list has a code from two versions back. My saved email has the code for the previous version. The code for the current version... not saved anywhere (other than that original email). Just had a thought while typing this though... wonder if the previous version can read the backup files for the newer version? If so, I can get install that, get that email, and then I should be good to go! I'll let you know if your question prompted a breakthrough ![]()

are there any internet cafes around near you where you can access the net and retrieve the data from your email?

Well that worked... thanks Time0!!!!
It was pretty grueling. Finding the right dbx file with the registration number took a few tries, but I got it, and installed my backup software with no problem. Then it turns out I had to restore a whole bunch of little pieces separately. PIA. Then had to sort out where they go. And then panic, because I can't remember how to get my folder structure where I store my email messages back... talking thousands of messages in hundreds of folders... if I had to put the messages (in groups, not individually) back into some sort of order it would be a nightmare. But then I remembered... figured it out... did it and now all of my email is back just the way it was. WHEW!!! And I even remembered to transfer my new emails (that I got today) so I wouldn't loose them either. Still a lot to do... but trucking along.

All of my email is stored locally on my computer. I'm not talking about recent emails... I'm talking about thousands of messages, all sorted, tech support, information archives, etc. I have web access through my own domain but there's no mail stored there, just holds it until I transfer it to my local machine with a send/receive. Otherwise my domain server would clog up pretty quickly... don't forget I often get large files as attachments... graphic files from work... which need to be stored.
Well it is all back now so I can breathe easier. Thanks Mellors and everyone for the suggestions and the hand holding...
