Has anyone heard of Tactile Defensiveness or Sensory Processing Disorders? My T is pretty confident I have this, and I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about it, or has it or anything like that? I'm doing a google search now...

Yes. I have tactile defensiveness and sensory processing disorder. Not sure what you want to know but would be happy answer questions/share.
Both are helped a lot by my massage therapist, her work helps to realign my nervous system. I also take anxiety meds that help with it for me. I am very sensory defensive all over. My son is the polar opposite and has sensory processing disorder but is a sensory seeker.

This is often associated with autism (they don't have to go together but often do) so if you don't get many hits here try posting over in autism.

Quote:
Sensory Processing Disorder can affect people in only one sense–for example, just touch or just sight or just movement–or in multiple senses. One person with SPD may over-respond to sensation and find clothing, physical contact, light, sound, food, or other sensory input to be unbearable. Another might under-respond and show little or no reaction to stimulation, even pain or extreme hot and cold. In children whose sensory processing of messages from the muscles and joints is impaired, posture and motor skills can be affected. These are the "floppy babies" who worry new parents and the kids who get called "klutz" and "spaz" on the playground. Still other children exhibit an appetite for sensation that is in perpetual overdrive. These kids often are misdiagnosed - and inappropriately medicated - for ADHD.

Very interesting, Roman, let us know what you learn. This foundation says one in five or six children may have sensory processing disorder.

Thanks everyone. I'm not a 100% sure I have it, though I suppose I could it to a slight/some degree. I never liked finger painting or getting messy when I was a kid. I also cringe at light touches, I need more pressure. I also prefer to be buried under heaps of blankets because I like the weight instead of nothing or just one sheet over me. I wouldn't be surprised if my dad has it, though, and my T did say it's handed down from parents to kids. I think I'll read some more up on it and talk to my T next time I see her.

Thanks again!

Weighted blankets are the BEST!!!
http://www.sensorygoods.com/ if you aren't fussy the clearance bin is the best! they suggest you get a blanket 10% of your body weight + 1lb
the discount code until the end of the month is SCHOOL this will give you 20% off even on top of the clearance price.
I have a 15lb and LOVE it! got a second as back up.

i call what i have "change of state aversion", but it amounts to a serious aversion to the water of the shower hitting my skin, or putting a cold pack on my body, or anything that other people do routinely, but i find shocking,, i never talked about this with a Pdoc,, they would just try to poison me,,, ;-) but thanks for bringing up the topic, Roman,, best wishes, Gus

My fiance and I are on a tight budget, so the first thing he said when I showed him the weighted blankets was "You could probably make one." So I looked up how to make one, and I came up with this website

http://craftnectar.com/2009/09/03/ca...hted-blankets/

I think I might try it. I might try making a smaller one first, and giving it to one of my soon-to-be nieces. After reading the description, I wonder if she has it (She's 4, can't speak more than 70 words, and has an extremely high pain tolerance to the point where the woman giving her the test said that at that level of electric shock she was receiving has grown men jumping off the table where as she just squirmed a little and pulled back her arm).

Thanks so much for bringing that to my attention. Even if I don't have Tactile Defensiveness, I think I'd still love a weighted blanket!!

What is tactile defensiveness? You don't like to be touched?
