The thing is... there is probably some truth in that. And yes, Prozac-popping desperate wifes make things worse for those who suffer genuine problems.

Because I met bunch of house-in-satellite town nouveau riche people who yakked about being depressed and nothing helping them at all... it turned into competition about how is more depressed and how hates monday mornings and their work more. It was overall pretty... stupid.

When I was 11 and told my parents of the psychosis I was experiencing , they told me and did lay their hands on me and spoke in tongues and cast the devil out, telling me that I was now cured of the devil. Afterwards I was left to either distrust my parents, god, or to really believe that god hates me, or the option to really think something was very wrong with me.

Yes, that and a little olive oil on the head seems to cure everything, according to my parents.

No i don't have any respect for that doctor who told me those things.

The most recent and ongoing thing I keep being told is from my mom about my dad "you need to forgive him" when he was my abuser. i wish my mom would be angry at the man who hurt me.

I think the most thing we all have heard is "Just move on" or "get over it" as if its not that big a deal and that it's our decision to be miserable or something.
Wow!!! My words exactly! ALL of those things have been said to me! Every single one!

Its infuriating!

From my grandmother, "Honey, you are what you eat, so eat better."

From my grandfather, "Ignore her advice, I do" :-)

*****mention of religion*****

I was talking to my grandmother who is VERY religious. I told her i was having a depressed episode. To which she replied
"oh no, you dont need a psychiarist, medicine, or a therapist. You need God! When you find god he will take everything away! Do you have a bible hunny? I'm sending you one (a cute pink one) tomm"

She then goes on to say "thats what your mom did, they had her on all kinds of medicine, then she got off the meds & found god! She was finally so happy! But then she killed herself."

Ummmmm. Thx gma.....
Thanks for this!

Hands down, the most ridiculous thing I've ever been told? That has to be the time my mother wrote me a six-page letter explaining how I wasn't really bipolar: it was just Satan's complicated evil plan to remove god from my life by taking away my joy in music. (...okay Mom, sure...)

A close second is the former coworker who told me I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near children.

Years ago during my first major depressive episode... I invited a friend over for dinner so we could talk because she also had gone through depressive episodes. Mutual friend of both husband and me.
Husband's sarcastic comment: Oh, so the two of you are going to have a pity-party.

That husband is now an Ex.

Hi, Great post.

I agree with some of the things that were said here, and i think i would have to say, the most ridiculous thing was said by my family, they told me "you're young, you don't have problems or issues to deal with" sometimes i think they don't know me at all.

I shared with someone a few days ago that I have bipolar illness and how disabling it can be, to help explain some things; and his response was, "I seriously doubt that, you look fine."

And I wonder what I should look like?

My PSYCHOLOGIST roomie told me I seem like a flegmatic. huh? I can fake it through depressive episode (it is actually funny how many people consider me saying "I wanna die" funny), though if you have a closer look, you will def notice something is going on, but I cannot fake it through hypomania. I talk faster. I get absurd in what I say.

I was actually happy to hear that. I can fake well. As well as I am happy to hear that I don't look nervous when public speaking.

(I was outed last year by a host PhD from Netherlands. He had an encouraging speech to me. Although... I know I am intelligent and I have things to say. Knowing does not help my anxiety still).

Most of the ridiculous things I've heard weren't about me specifically but my disorder in general, as I don't often tell people that I'm a psychopath. Some of those things include...

Psychopaths have black eyes. I have blue eyes.
Psychopaths have empty eyes. If I had empty eyes, I wouldn't be able to see.
Psychopaths are demonically possessed. Then find me an exorcist.
Psychopaths are demons in the flesh. So that explains why holy water makes me itch...
Psychopaths are lizard people ("reptilians"): http://stargods.org/ReptilianStare.htm -- Quote from the site: "The bottom line is that no difference that can be found between a Reptilian and a Psychopath. The occult label for these people is Reptilian and the psychiatric term is Psychopathic. If some one you know gives you this look, then it is best to avoid them. More examples below. These people may or may not be reptilians, but are offered as possible examples of what the "stare" looks like. It is an empty hypnotic look."...Seriously?
Psychopaths eat people. On the contrary, most cannibalistic serial killers were not psychopathic. See: Dahmer, Chase, Fish, etcetera. And still, I hear this one all the time...
Psychopaths are emotional vampires (purported by experts). I want to suck your love.
Psychopaths are real vampires.

If you have any more, please let me know. I'm going to make a list...

*Edit*
Psychopaths are psychotic. Just... No...
Psychopaths are serial killers.
Psychopaths are not human/subhuman/monsters/etcetera (also purported by experts).

I have heard someone say that all psychopaths are murderers and abusers. Thankfully i have enough sensibility (especially after joining PC) to know thats not true...
