I kind of hate (we wouldn't want to get either too specific or too extreme) the sound of that sort of model, like we're an electro-mechanical wonder toy?

That site is mostly about brain function, Perna, but this sentence about panic disorder might allay some of your fears (!):

"A convergence of evidence suggests that both inheritable factors and stressful life events, particularly in early childhood, are responsible for the onset of panic disorder."

So there is the connection between brain and experience. But the brain is (or seems to be) an electro-chemical wonder toy!
