I've made a decision. I'm gonna go back to college. Before I went to a business college and took Computer Applications/Business Management. That didn't take me anywhere. Just employers telling me I needed more experience.

I've decided to go for a distance learning course in psychology. I guess this would be good for me since I'm good with people, very empathetic, compassionate, care very deeply for others, and want to make a difference in the world. I'm sick of going around to all these therapists who never have time for you or they really have no interest in helping you...you know the ones...they're only out for a paycheck.

I could never in a million years be so insensitive and harsh as to care about that more than people who are in need. Maybe this would be a good thing for me to do. What do you guys think?

What's funny is that my bf sometimes says I care more about supporting and helping people online than I do for people IRL! I mean like he wants to spend every waking minute with me while I'd rather be supportive to everyone online!

Good luck in the psychology course!!

You seem to have a lot of good qualities that would make it a good fit for a choice course.

If you ever want to chat about psychology, PM me Going Back to School

(I'm a second-year psychology student, so I know a bit about some stuff!)

You might consider social work, addiction counseling (might only require an associates degree) or human services. If you want to talk about psychology, I'd enjoy that. (studying addiction counseling and took atleast three or four psychology courses in my first degree).
I think knowing what it is like to be the client will help you to be a better counselor. I think I have noticed in my classes that it changes how I see things in the classes.

Since I'm a survivor of sexual abuse, I want to be an abuse or trauma counselor or something like that. Someone who specializes in abuse.

That's awesome that you want to return to school, to further your education. There's so many more oppurtunities for people who have an education. That's why I started myself.

I wish you well, and I hope it all works out for you.....and bf too.

Very true! Like you said, a therapist who has been through stuff will be a much better therapist because the academic PLUS experiential is there. That is one reason I sought and received my grad degree in Mental Health Counseling and was told many times by clients that I was the first person who "understood" them.

And as another poster said, there are so many branches within the field that one can go in the area of psychology. For example, I worked with Hospice. There are myriads of opportunities for social work and has been mentioned, addictions. State agencies, specialized work with children, etc.

Please keep us updated how things are going!!

What's funny is that I'm going for this and my bf is a certified ICM Aide. We're both into the mental health field! :P
