an official for FEMA just said on the news that FEMA ordered 90,000 travel trailers and 30,000 mobile homes for hurricane victims. they are still setting. so NOW, they think they may send some of the mobile homes to California (to prepare for their weather season) and maybe let some of the people in Mississippi have some of the travel trailers....................WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH FEMA???????????????????????TALK ABOUT INCOMPETENCE. a man in an Arkansas town had gone public and showed the 12,000 travel trailers that are still parked outside his town. now FEMA was made to 'fess up about how many "homes" are really setting around and no one is getting to use them.........
I AM FURIOUS AND I AM CALLING EVERY SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE THAT IS IN OKLAHOMA AND A FEW MORE ABOUT THIS! all those poor people without a home and there are 120,000 units setting in different locales???????????????????? "Brownie, you're doing a hecka job".........pat |

for credibility, so no one thinks this was a "story" by a reporter...these two men were sitting in front of the cameras and being interviewed by a CNBC reporter. both were identified with their names and titles under their video.

I have a couple friends in New Orleans (well not in new orleans now but from new orleans originally). They were offered such trailers. The problem isn't in not using the trailers its the fact that the land in new orleans is still contaminated to the point where it is a biohazzard for people toi live on so many of the people who used to live in new orleans has found new homes in surrounding areas like New Iberia, Baton Rouge, and so on. There still are people living in the contaminated areas. They have been offered the trailers with the stipulation that they live on non contaminated land. alot of those still living there chose not to leave New Orleans. for them it was all they knew. But to FEMA's credit they can't legally have people take the trailers and live on contaminated land because somewhere down the road someone may up and have problems resulting to their living on contaminated land and that leaves FEMA open to possible lawsuits. and so if the people of new orleans are not going to use the trailers while new orleans is being cleaned up and rebuilt its time to send those trailers to a place where they can be used.

I live in an area where there are quite a few mobile home manufacturers. My dad works for one of them.
I guess the quality of living has to be safe for the homes to be transported to the areas in New Orleans? That would make a lot of sense...but still people are homeless down there, which is very sad. My heart goes out to them.

Yes people are still homeless down there. But New orleans was evacuated. Those that are still there chose to return and remain even after being given shelter, hotel rooms, motel rooms, strangers opened up their homes to them and their animals, theres even people here on the west coast from new orleans making new lifes and some attending colleges here.
It's sad that people are living like that and that its taking so long to clean up and rebuild New orleans but those people chose to go back and remain and chose not to use the help offered to them. Fema and other government officials can't force those people to accept the help. And yes it has to be safe in order for the trailers to be set up in new orleans. Look at the past issues of contaminated land problems - one well known one is the story of Erin Brokovich and contaminated water supply of a whole town, New orleans water supply is now contaminated not through a company but a natural disaster. I don't agree with everything that went on before during and after Katrina but I am glad the people of FEMA are stepping up and trying to see to in that issues like the Erin Brokovich story doesn't happen if they can prevent it. I too wish to see those still living there taken care of - whisked back out of there, given those trailers but USA is a free nation. People have the right to make their own choices. They are choosing to stay even after help was given to leave the area and while more help was offered after they left the area. They made their choice. FEMA let those trailers sit as long as they could waiting for them. and still no takers so its time to send the trailers elsewhere. |

I saw that on Oprah a few weeks ago and then they started sending some of the trailers down there but I agree too many are homeless needlessly and the housing for the motels and such has run out at least here in Atlanta they have...but given the time since the hurricane I think people should be trying to help themselves a little more too. for alot of them though it is impossible due to their ages and health

I saw the oprah show too. The trailers were sent in long before that show. they trailers went in shortly after the bus loads of supplies and evacuations. CNN, 60 minutes and prime time, I believe first showed buses going in and then the miles of trailers being parked and the process of signing up for them at the time people were being allowed back in to the area to check on their homes and personal posessions.
Ages yes some are set in their ways. and want to remain its not impossible though. The ill, elderly and children were the first to recieve the evacuation and health care and resources. That is why many children and elderly got separated from their families during the evacuation and resources part of the governements helping the survivors. There are still many children and elderly on those lists by the red cross and so on that have not yet been able to be reunited with their families. Yes I agree its time for those survivors to start trying to help themselves. The government can only do so much. They cant pay for those hotels and motels for ever. and they can't force people to accept their help either. Like that childrens story still being told to adults too of the man on a roof top who claimed to all that tried to help no god will save me, and once he died god explained how he sent him the help but it was his own choice to say no or accept that help and in doing so helped himself. |
