I don't know if this is the right place for this.

My fiance has been having trouble getting to sleep since we quit drinking 59 days ago. After getting sick of always being tired [and sometimes cranky] he broke down and purchased a sleeping agent from Unisom for the first time. He took the recommended doseage, fell asleep and woke up with one word repeating over and over and over inside of his head "suiciiiide. suiciiiiiiide"
It freaked him out as he has never been suicidal, is not depressed and has never experienced anything like this before. It was as if an evil spirit was inside of him convincing him to kill himself.

Thoughts, please?

Only the basics which have probably already occurred to you:
1. keep an eye on him
2. toss the sleeping pills
3. there are no evil spirits
How is he feeling now?

Wow, I don't know ladyjane, but what I do know is that a lot of drugs have a lot of side effects and that includes sleeping aides.

I hope your hubby is ok now, don't let him take that ever again.

I threw them out right away, he agreed with that. I made sure he hasn't had any thoughts about suicide or anything lately, he hasn't. I know there aren't evil spirits, lol, I was just exaggerating.
I guess I am not worried about him, I am just looking to delve into what could cause this to happen to a perfectly happy person.

Hey ... you were just being descriptive and I figured you had already covered the obvious but better safe...
Sorry but I don't know anything about sleeping pills. This gives me less trust in them than I already didn't have though. I'd still keep a pretty close watch on him for a couple of days. I have no clue what the half life of this stuff might be. Where's bipolarmedstudent when you need her

If I had to guess I'd say he had a nightmare.

Yeah, maybe it was a strange one. I think I'll do some research on it, thanks for the link

I personally prefer the natural sleep aids.....I just got one at CVE called Alteril....there is also something called Somapure that is similar.

I remember taking one of the OTC sleep aids when I was in an out-patient after being inpatient at a mental hospital. They did a urinalysis every day.......thought it was the Unisom....but it showed up that I was on drugs like coc....sort of like how poppy seeds show up as being on drugs.

I figure if it shows up that way in the urine, it can have other effects also. I know this natural sleep aid gives me a really good sleep. I have been having serious problems getting to sleep & staying asleep & find this really works well for me.
Contents are: L-Tryptophan (same thing that's in Turkey...lol...why we fall asleep after Thanksgiving dinner)
GABA
Skullcap Herb Extract
Glycine
Valerian Root Extract
Chamomile Herb
Hops Strobile Extract
Passion Flower Herb Extract
Melatonin

I am very sensitive to anything that goes into my body.....if I can have a bad side effect, I will & have had.....so to have this work well for me is really a wonderful accomplishment.

My pain specialist prescribed Tamazapam, but I'm leary about taking it unless I am desperate to sleep.....too many possible side effects for me......& thinking suicidal thoughts is definitely not a good reaction even to an OTC med

While taking Ambien I got up and half-asleep attempted suicide by taking the rest of the bottle of ambien (19 pills), apparently telling everyone I wanted to kill myself because I hated my job. I don't remember hardly any of it. So yes, sleep medication can make someone suicidal.
