I've been having a lot of problems, and they just keep getting worse. I'm supposed to be going to a mental health center to get help, and get treatment...but i'm too scared. I know that I need help, but I can't do it. I don't even know how to tell my parents. Any advice?

((((Ticli-Otoops)))),

You are not going someplace bad, you are going to a place that can help you sort through your struggles. You are doing the "responsible thing" for yourself. So don't be afraid, you just need to get help figuring some things out. I had to do that too and I sure am glad I did.

And you have all of us to piggyback you, support you, and help you if you have questions. You're going to be ok.

Mental health ctr's are usually pretty good........good therapists, good counselors and good Doc's...........maybe you can bring someone with you the first time to be supportive. Really, its going to be alright!!!

I like my therapist at the mental health center. It's not scary, she is really nice and has a sense of humor. It will be alright.

Think of it as jumping into a cold lake/pool. Its scary/shocking/frightening, but once you get in, you adjust to the temperature and things are just fine. And sometimes mental health centers can have some "creepy" clientel. Make sure to bring yourself a book to read while you are waiting to hide behind to distract yourself and keep others from engaging you in conversation.

as for your parents, are you over 18? im assuming since it sounds like you already have the appt. have your t help you come up with a way to tell your parents you are getting help. i went the first time when i was 18 and that scenario didnt go well. i tried to keep it a secret. the mh place called to cancel an appt even tho i told them never to call my house. my parents sat me down and said, so youre going to counseling, huh...i answered yes. "its nothing we did, is it?" i said no. and i never went back to couseling again i felt so violated. but you could simply explain to your parents that you are having difficulties coping with....... and decided to get some cousneling to gain a better understanding about what you are going through and some skills to deal with it.

good luck...

I also had the idea to go to a residential center...and that's the plan I had. But, school's starting again soon. And, i've put this off for so long...that I know I really need help. And I don't know if just going to a center a few times will help much... :/

They can help you make that decision and give you some options.

Try to ask if you can sit someplace outside of the normal waiting area if there is a lot of people around?

Know the feeling, will adventually end up in state care. No real places to go in my parish, will be forced to go to Downtown New Orleans and deal with the masses, just what I need.VA hosp is even worse, right in the middle of the madness.

If you don't feel comfortable with telling them right now that all well and fine. If you really want to get the help you need I suggest you just face that fear and try your best to overlook it.

Everyone is right, hon. It's not a 'bad' place. They try to make it as 'anxiety free' as possible. Just face it and go -- you''ll be so proud of yourself when you do. And you do need the help, so PLEASE GO??? I promise I'll be with you in spirit, as will everyone else.

I felt the same when I went for help the first time, and it was NOT as bad as I thought. And I felt good about myself after I did it. So please go, okay? It will do you a lot of good. God bless hon, and let us know will you? Please?/ Hugs, Lee

I wonder why the doctor can't help you do this. If you're "supposed" to go... the doctor who says that needs to assist you in that.

But truly those with DID don't do well in any locked up situation...nor might they do very well in a group setting of living.

Since school is beginning again, can you locate the school counselor's contact information now, and maybe also schedule a visit? That way you'll have something to look forward to for help, and that may make these days less troublesome.
