Hello,
I just joined, but I have a question that I am hoping you wonderful people can answer. (I've been lurking for a while lol) I was diagnosed with BPD and Schizoaffective about 5 years ago. I've seen many docs, but kept the same case manager. The issue is this: My docs won't listen to me (they continually change who I'm seeing so freakin often). I'm constantly asked what triggers my very slight hallucinations... more like just white noise. I never really payed attention, but I have lately. I lack focus, my mind races, my mood swings from one extreme to the other (multiple times a day). I'm either happy or upset... NOT manic or depressed. I've tried to tell them that I don't believe I have bipolar. BPD does not run in my family, but ADD does. My wife has ADD, and her symptoms are very similar to mine. Adderall worked wonders for me (before they diagnosed the BPD/Schizoaffective) but NONE of my docs will write a rx. I've done extensive research, and my symptoms match Adult ADD more than BPD. Also, none of the BP or Sz medications have worked for me... antipsychotics, benzodiazapines, antidepressants, sleepmeds, otc... nothing Sorry for the long post, but main question is: Does anyone have any tips to get my pdoc to even consider Adult ADD over BPD? I have an appt soon, and I want them to listen to me... just once lol. Even the Schizoaffective (BPD and Shizophrenia together fyi) symptoms aren't present in my life. BTW, I know many symptoms can overlap, but my symptoms match ADD more than Sz, BPD, of szaffective. If you have the time, I would appreciate if you could read the article below. I have more symptoms of ADD than BPD. I would go into more detail, but it's already pretty long... I would greatly appreciate any help. This is is my first post so hello everyone ![]() additudemag.com has an good article on what I'm talking about. I googled: bipolar or add and it was the first link on google. |

Since your therapist won't listen why don't you try talking to your medical doctor? You can't FORCE your therapist to listen, and often they are tooo arrogant to even THINK of considering a patient''s suggestion of a different drug. So I'd talk to my medical doctor and see what HE thinks. Chances are he would be more apt to listen to you and switch you to the Adderall, and see how it works.
I hope your doc will give it a chance. PLEASE -- let me know how it goes, will you?? I would REALLY like to know. Okay? Hugs, Lee

Sadly, bipolar disorder in adults is often misdiagnosed as "adult ADD". I'd get a couple of opinions and go in there just stating facts without saying "somebody else diagnosed me with [insert abbreviations]". Just get a couple of docs to look at it with fresh eyes. Don't try to influence it one way or the other because you're afraid of having bipolar.
