Our two steer arrived today. They ran out of the truck, and immediately began surveing the property side by side. Never saw anything like it. They almost came to me, but our neighbor's father, who bought them for us said they are still not tame.

Tonight we have no idea where they are. Evidently they have gone off to a quiet corner of the property. One -third of our property is wooded, so they could be anywhere. Well this is our day 1 in the cattle business.

Hugs,

EJ

Cool! I remember my dad raised cows when he was farming. I just loved it.

Best of luck to you!

What are you going to do with them? Are they for food, pets or something else?

Now you're a rancher. Have fun with the steers. Now you'll have to learn to rope.

Maven and Rhapsody -

Once they have matured, we will be selling them, and take our profit.

are they really steers? as in castrated young males? i used to buy and sell feeder steers and turned a pretty good profit every year. will you be keeping them 105 days? or have you decided that?

Just so you know, I wasn't criticizing you if they're for food. I eat meat. It was just out of curiosity. The Steer are Here I always prefer to hear animals aren't going to be killed, but I'm not stupid; I know where meat comes from.

I figured YOU were...................... I just didn't want to think about you eating your PET.... my sister did that to my niece and she went nuts on them at the dinner table when someone told her that was eating old Buck.

But all in all I was just having fun with YOU - I love HAMBURGERS...... The Steer are Here

Hi Pat -

They are steer (no jewelry).

We are going under the advice of our neighbor, who has been in the business all his life, and his father before him. Having steer will cut down any fence jumping to get to neighbor's cattle or vice versa.

We'll go on neighbor's advice for the best time to sell.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hey Maven,

I wasn't taking it as criticism.

I couldn't eat Dakota and Winston, but I can love them while they are here, and then send them off to their destiny, when the time comes.

Having cattle on the property is such a good way to lower taxes, and a lot of fun besides. My husband is more excited than a kid about this whole thing.

Hugs,

EJ

Hi All,

Day 2 - Cattle Ranching: Hubby and I took a walk to find our steer. Sure enough they were in the far southwest corner of the property. They are really handsome "babies" (about 520 pounds each). Still standing right by each other. Tomorrow we are going to go out with feed buckets. Next time we get new steer, I think we will create another section of fencing, which will keep them close in until they tame up some.

This is a little different than investing in the stock market, and pulling up the Dow Jones report. Had to hike (which I generally love) about a mile and a half each way to make sure they were still on the property.

Hope everybody is having a good day.

Hugs,

EJ

Aaah, the country life! We used to raise day old calves on the left over goat's milk and turn a profit that way. We'd also feed them the alphalpha stems the goats wouldn't eat. My two younger boys were pretty young then and would fancy themselves "rough riders" and get on the calves and try to ride them when they thought they were big enough. It was really funny to watch! Neither one of them managed to stay on past one buck of the calf. LOL

Have fun with your steer, EJ! Just don't get too attached. The Steer are Here

September Morn -

Thanks for the words of wisdom about not getting too attached.

What makes you think I would get too attached -- LOL!

Hi EJ,

Welcome to Winston and Dakota then! Sounds like they have a real roomy pasture to enjoy. That will be good for them. Lucky guys. :-) Hope this goes well for you and your husband!

Take care,

Hi All,

Guess who showed up for dinner? Winston and Dakota. My dogs spotted them first. They were standing on the edge of the tall grass, about 15 ft. away from their feeding station. The next time we looked, they were feeding happily out of the station. They fed for about two hours. I can't believe how handsome they are. Do I sound like a new mother or what?

That's all from the Prairie for now,

EJ
