Last Sunday we had a bad storm and lightening struck our Internet modem. Today was the soonest that a repairman could get here!!!

Seems that the lightening ran in through the modem (which is fine) but fried the cord between the modem and the computer. It also wiped out the Ethernet card. (we had to replace both)

He says that the surge protector doesn't do squat when it comes to lightening and that the lightening can get to your computer even when it is off........guess from now on I'll be unplugging it, rather than just turning it off when it storms.

Anyway, I've been climbing the walls without the computer. I'm glad to be back. Darn Lightening

Yep, it's par for the course around here, unfortunately. We've never had anything hit by lightening before though.

We did have our roof damaged by hail one year and our patio cover destroyed by heavy snow another year. Lots of hazardous weather around these parts. Darn Lightening

Hi Ozzie,

I'm so sorry this happened to you - it has happened to friends I know back east, and even to friends here, where we had a freak lightening storm a couple of summers ago. I even had lightening damage in my own apartment unit. Like you said, I unplug my computer and any sensitive equipment now if I hear thunder rumbling!

So sorry about all the damage at your place. How upsetting.....

((((Ozzie))))

Take care,
ErinBear

Darn Lightening yes, lightening can go BACKWARDS through your surge protectors and bypass the protective aspect of it! I've been in 2 homes hit by lightening, and had to replace ALL electronics. (Fortunately, the ins co understood lightening better than I did, and replaced it all. )

I'm so sorry that happened. Ryan told me to unplug the phone cord from the modem. He says the surge protector will take care of the computer, but that electricity can hit the phone cord.

Hugs,

Jan

Fortunately, this didn't cost us a cent. The cable guy told us what the problem was and gave us a new cable that runs between the modem and the computer.....no charge for any of that. My hubby said we had a fairly new Ethernet card which he installed in our old computer at one time so he found it and installed it in this one and it worked!! (it stressed us out and took us about 2 hours to do the job)

Thanks for your reply Sky. Darn Lightening

Jan, the cable guy said to unplug the computer from the modem because the lightening comes in thru the modem. We have cable Internet so maybe it works differently.

We have a new 36" tv that we turn off everytime it storms. Maybe we need to unplug it too. We usually just turn it off. Darn Lightening Darn Lightening Darn Lightening Darn Lightening
