the way i look at creativity in how i accept someone else, is trying to find something (that i create) that clicks with me....then i work to "click" back and create a connection........they may %#@&#! me off in a dozen ways, but usually there is something there to "create".............thank YOU, xoxox pat

sky, i will be allowed to photograph almost anyone if i approach them with respect and allow them the dignity to refuse me, as well as accept me. that is how i work.
and just about the only people who call Indians Native Americans are anglos. i've never heard an Indian refer to herself or others as NAs. JFYI. that is a term that was invented in Washington. it sounds so much better than saying "them injuns are wanting their land back and they are also whining about wanting water service, phone service and electricity and by the way i wish them injuns would quit *****ing about our not keeping our word".......... |

tomi, good question..........just "indian".......it was indian when it all started and it's still indian......Bureau of Indian Affairs.....BIA. that hasn't changed.
it was politicians that changed the wording. it's interesting to me, that it has never bothered me, or the other indians that i know, to be called an indian. a Navajo would die laughing over being called a Native American. he/she would immediately start asking pointed ![]() so many people get so uptight over the politically correct terms nowadays.....and i suspect that a politician coined "politically correct", don't you? ![]() the village that i lived in, in NM, was once owned by indians. Onate' came in with his soldiers and killed the inhabitants and took the village over. changed the name also. he and his army went to the Acoma pueblos and cut the right foot off of every grown male. as this was being related to me by an indian, he said, "i bet them indians back then was just praying to be left along so they could go back to being indians"..........Onate' came over from Spain and took the majority of NM away from the original inhabitants. hundreds of thousands of taxpayers's dollars were used, while i lived in NM, to build a huge bronze statue of Onate', on his horse, that stood by the new visitor's center. (which was named for a local politician, who was ousted from office for taking bribes ![]() |

"Indian" suits me just fine!
![]() Your story is very interesting! I've always thought that "political correctness" was an attempt to "whitewash" the truth, anyway! ![]()

![]() The world is much "bigger" today, and Indian is ...also...from... India? American Indian is probably more proper, yes? If not just using the tribe i.e. I am Cherokee. I think Native American is also quite proper. (Unless you are talking about the First People of Canada???) aya gayadahi ugidali.

sky.............i sometimes don't know how to take what you say. you know that. it's confusing at times.
i've not met any indians that i could not photograph. and you can rest assured that i don't photograph anyone without their permission and their signing of a release form. and i always give them a 16X20 of the print. as for as "being off topic", that happens all the time here. i started the thread and was asked some questions. i answered them. please feel free to call indians any term that you wish to call us. since my base of working with other indians is so broad, i'm gonna keep calling us indians........it's been my life's work since 1988 and i feel pretty comfortable with it...all of it. i'm sorry if i offended you. there are just those times............ xoxoxo pat |

(((fayerody))) the offtopic icons were to show respect for your original subject... anytime YOU wish to go off topic is fine when it's your thread (but I'm on your thread...going off topic so I admitted it.)
I do know when I was out in NM that the Pueblo Indians did not wish to be photographed, though they allowed the reservation to be (except, of course the graveyard.) I think I will continue to call us Native Americans for the general time/people and American Indians when I know it's a smaller audience and Indian when I remember I'm chatting with you ![]() ![]()

Thank you again for the reminder that I need to pay attention in there... I just was lost in there for about 15 30 min or so....
