I visited a web-site of musical artist ... as I was browsing I happened to notice a block that stated Curious visiting (or something like that) and it had the country and flag displayed of those visiting.
My goodness .. it made me feel exposed!!

Believe it or not your pretty much exposed to whatever website you are visiting, it's kind of creepy. What I don't get is how they target advertising on my computer, do they like have spys that know I'm a mother and a student........makes me feel non safe as well.

Desirae, they usually do this by installing "spy ware" when you visit sites on the web. What I have done is install, for FREE, a program that cleans spyware and tracking cookies. It's called AdAware and you can download it for free at Geeks.com. I run mine every night if not more often.
There's also another one called Spybot Search and Destroy which is stronger, but the last time I used it, I had to run a recovery on my computer. BE FOREWARNED! Another one they'll try to get you to download is SpyDoctor. DON'T DO IT! Just scroll down on that page and you'll find the downwload for AdAware.

I use AdAware - I have been happy so far. I have used Spybot too but they never turn up anything!
I do realise that one is exposed no matter what site is visited ... I just got a shock seeing my country's flag!

I don't know why I should think they cant see that though ... Guess I was being naive!

Sabrina...you can get a program that will make you invisible on the internet... ghost-surf ...check it out...I haven't used it recently but when I did it worked pretty good...I am going to check it out again and see what improvements they've made...

It was a site about Josh Groban which I have never been to there before but I was listening to my cd's and wanted to check something out. But yes, it was strange to see my flag with 1 curious on-line!

I know I am off-topic ... I have his DVD .... a live concert ... now that just about does it! I am a classical singer - so yes that voice .... ok .. what was the point of this thread anyway .. I don't think I care any more - says she about to play Josh's dvd!!

HUH??? Went back to check and I got a poll asking me if I like George Bush!! It didn't show me where the other 4 "curious Josh peeps" were from, though.
 Maybe you better clear you browser cache, Hun. They must have some tracking cookies.

Just under the Curious block is a block for number of times visited from a country.
US is 6458. UK is 275 and SA .. where I am is (shame) only 59. Fascinating ... and frightening ... these tracking things!

They are able to do this because EVERY computer is given an IP address based on their location just like a person is given a street address po box and so on in the real world. Using IP numbers computers can "talk" to each other. Most if not all website owners have a program attatched that tells the owner what the computers IP number is of those that visit their website. (This is also how websites can ban members off the site - they just key in a code that computers IP number no longer opens the website).
spyware is a program that website owners attatch to their websites. onece you open a website that has that program on it, it attatches to your computer and sends the website with the original spyware attached where you have been on line. This is how alot of ID thefts happen. Sooner or later that person ends up getting your personal information - bank accounts, birthdays, social security numbers and so on. Which is why people are now using spyware and firewall protection. as far as I know you can't prevent other peoples computers from having your IP address because that is how computers talk to each other but with firewall and spyware protection you get notified the second you open a website with spyware attatched. When mine comes up it says - spyware detected and blocks we recommend you scan your computer. Then when I turn on the scanning it asks me if I want to quarentine or remove or both that spyware found. by having both spyware and firewall protection none of my other files get infected with spyware and viruses. and rarely get advertizements. |
