Okay, this is a vent. Since when is it okay for a fellow patient/peer support group person to tell me that my therapist's diagnosis is invalid and I need further testing? I was kicked out of the real-life DID support group here that I've been attending fr two years almost every month because the leader, a DID sufferer herself, doubts I'm sincerely dissociative and wants me to go to a recognized trauma center rather than my own therapist for diagnosis. Thing is she doesn't ask every participant to have a trauma center diagnosis; at least two others have a working diagnosis or a diagnosis not based on formal trauma center testing too. Besides, if a trauma center diagnosis were required, she should've kicked me out right at the start. This person has admitted the reason for kicking me out is her gut feeling that I'm not sincere and this causing unsafe feelings with the others. I can however come back if I have a trauma center diagnosis. I know we live in an information era, where patients may know more about their conditions than therapists, but still as a peer you've got to know your limits.

its my understanding that those that run the chats/social groups and forums have the right to boot anyone they want out for any reason they so choose...

its also my understanding that discussing administrative issues is not allowed on the boards...

my suggestion contact a moderator and the administrator of this group that you have been kicked out of. they are the ones that can help you resolve or move on with this issue.

So she's the "leader" but does that give her the POWER to kick you out? Since she's also a "fellow sufferer" shouldn't there have been a vote on the subject? Seems to me that the group should have voted on it, not just let her arbitrarily throw you out! Who the heck does she think she is? Sigmund Freud? (sp)

Seems to me she's just a bit power hungry, and likes being a diagnostician, which she definitely is NOT. How in the world would SHE know if you were dissociative or not? She wouldn't know any more than I would!

Personally, I think I'd talk to the "higher ups' if there are any. She's treating people unfairly, and this needs to stop. She should NOT be sending people to the Trauma center. They've got better things to do than retest people who have been diagnosed by their therapists! See if you can talk to someone about her!!!

Best of luck and keep us posted, okay? Hugs, Lee

I would not want to be in a group that had members who did not want me there, especially if they were in some leadership capacity; it would not be a group I would have much faith in. What did your therapist say when/have you told her?

Thanks for the replies. Yes Amanda, I was talking about a real-life group not PC. I'd never discuss PC admin issues on PC. If I were in trouble here I'd go somewhere else to vent, LOL.

I havent'spoken to my therpist yet. She's on sick leave (again).

I'm sorry you were kicked out of this group, this sounds very painful especially if you were receiving needed support there.

This doesn't apply to the people in your group, as you say that some have not been officially diagnosed, but I will say that in general many people believe that psychiatrists -not psychologists- are those most qualified to diagnose; their skills are in large part built around being diagnosticians. I personally tend to recommend to people that they seek diagnosis through a psychiatrist. Of course not all are particularly competent, and not all therapists are not skilled in diagnosis, so it depends.

The IRL support group I attend bars the host from putting ppl out for any reason.
We discuss the reasons ppl can be asked to leave. We also ask that no one give advise or attempt to diagnose others. Proof of diagnosis is not required.

Well yeah, at AA I don't think you have to prove you are an alcoholic...that may be a terrible analogy but why on earth would you need proof like that...it seems personal enough that you are there. And her gut causing unsafe feelings with others is her doing. And questioning your T and telling you what to do would push me over the top.
Is there another group like that you could attend instead?
