I know that stress can cause illness and what not, but I am wondering about the more unusual symptoms? Beyond just the normal I'm really irritable, and made myself sick with the stress? Can any psychological problems develop from being stressed out a lot?

It's only recently that I have become aware of the effects that stress has had on my life. It has led to both physical and emotional problems and I was clueless as to the source. Everyone is different and symptoms and reactions will vary a lot from person to person.

Thanks for posting this. I'll enjoy reading the comments.

Considering I have a neurological illness, that is exacerbated by stress, I can say that for me, one of the unusual stress reactions is near fainting. I've had blood work done, to rule out the usual suspects(diabetes, blood pressure, anemia, et al). Basically, under stress, I can and have had spells where I've felt like I was just about to pass out. That is not normal. When the stress trigger, from this latest round was removed, then I haven't experienced that.

Do you have any unusual psychological reactions, in mind, when asking about what stress can cause?

I cannot believe I am saying this, but, when I am around my "mom", it encourages the Demons to insult me even more.

They even feed off on her anger and use it against me.

It is a good thing that I just moved in with my dad yesterday.

I will never see that ***** (my mom) ever again.

With me, I tend to dissociate a lot. It's even made my blood pressure go too LOW! Sometimes, my headaches and back pain get worse. I also get more depressed.

It narrows my world and I have trouble thinking, it's like having tunnel vision and it gets hard to find anything pleasant/relaxing/imaginative or do much creative. Over too much time I lean toward depression, like the life is being choked out of me.

Over the last year my depression has transformed in the crippling bouts of anxiety. Recent "event" in the news only seem to exacerbate my feelings. In the last two months I have noticed my hair is falling out in small handfuls. At first, I thought is was my meds that were causing this but my pdoc says that hair loss is not a side effect of any of the drugs I am on... she thinks it's my body reacting to stress. Nice, like going bald won't add to my stress level. Grrr.

I went through a period similar. It wasn't a psyche med, but a neuro med. Supposedly, not a side effect, but a stress reaction. I stopped having this trouble, a while ago. I'm not on that neuro drug, not on any neuro drug, so take if for what it's worth

I've known of someone else, not on a neuro drug, to have periods of hair loss.

Hope whatever is the cause of this, subsides sooner than later

Wrinkles, unusual eating times and habits, abnormal sleeping habits, nightmares, quick onset of anxiety and/or crying.

thanks for starting this thread, Fleury. i have been managing stress loads double those said to be "dangerous" - putting one at risk of accident, illness, or poor judgement.

in one way i am proud of myself, because in the past i have had all sorts of physical reactions to too much stress... but presently, i only have a kink in my neck , and well,,, i'm cussing all the time little things set me off. i should say "did" set me off, in the past week i am noticing that i've gotten alot better.

many years ago, when i was in college, i had a panic attack, and didn't know what it was. the nurse at the college clinic explained to me about stress and panic, and told me how to gauge my stress levels, so i could take steps to reduce or manage them. essentially you can make up your own stress test, because only you know how much something bothers you. but remember to include changes that you consider positive, because any change is stressful, or perhaps no change for one who desires it, can be stressful.

make up your own chart, where "normal", manageable stress levels are like a 2 or 200, and being upset enough to have symptoms for a little while is a 4 or 400... that kind of scale. then rate the kinds of things that cause you stress; like, for me a fight with a doctor is very stressful, getting 2 (or 200) points. having to go out of town to see a doc is another 1 (or 100); etc. for me, 700 becomes dangerous: i begin "accidentally" burning myself while cooking, dropping things on my foot, etc. at around 1000 i get a pain in my neck... the greater the stress, the more severe the symptom.

lately i got up into the 1500's , and did not get sick, did not injure myself, and only last week got a little crick in my neck. i have learned to stop criticizing myself relentlessly (tho i still criticize others, it's not as much); stop laying blame for things; and mostly to stop remembering over and over every thing that upset me~!

i have improved in my "mental health" so much that my brain is not ready to fall over at every little push: that is the real difference. i hope you too find ways to "manage" stress,,, set it down, let it go, move it along... etc.
best wishes,
Gus

One particular time - I know it was the cause of my heart actually skipping a few beats (I literally felt all the stress, and the heart actually stopping for like a second or two a few times in a row) - not a good thing, the heart skipping beats like that caused even more worries!

Hi Fleury29. Stress causes me to melt down. When I get to the point that I can't handle any more stress, I just blow up. I also smoke like a freight train. Hehehe. Cigs that is.
Lack of sleep causes me a lot of stress, and then I sleepwalk and, do strange things.
I drank some liquid soap a couple weeks ago. It was awful. I threw up. It was so gross.

I can't think of any more right now. I''l talk to you later.

Sincerely,

Piraeus

Total stress., your head fills with a thick fog, blocking out the outside , you are void of everything that's happening has your brain struggles to gain control. Blurred vision , powerful headache, ect ect, one click and it can go anyway, into depression or out the other side back to wellness.

Good thread Fleury. I had significant hair loss some time ago due to stress. I mean falling out to the point where I went to the doctor's. I was really surprised to find out that the stress I was under caused a flare up of a physical condition that led to hair loss. Embarrassing, to say the least but you cannot just turn off the stress. Dr. recommended I see a T pronto. I've also experienced lack of sleep, lack of concentration and depression (but that may have been in place already).
