Hi-

I have to go to my neuro on Moday and I want to cancel. I hate being in public and am dreading going there. It is and hour and half away, and it is a new MD to me. My most favorite doc of all left the practice and now I have to see a male MD..No females in the practice will absorb her old ones. Also I have cancelled this appt 3 times.
Sorry to be a whiner, but it is a lot to handle. The anxiety is driving me crazy as I really do need to see the neurologist.

She knew exactly how to relax me to do her exam...I am going to be so wired, I do not even know if i will be able to walk...when i get anxious my condition worsens.

OMG~

,
Kirby

that's a shame that your old md left you. I understand your reluctance to go to the dr. I hate them myself. do you have an anxiety prn med you can take to get you there? putting it off any longer is just going to increase your anxiety. it is really hard for me to try and say something supportive in going when I hate drs so much. you gotta do what you gotta do. I just wanted to offer some support and say I understand why you are so scared of going. I would be too. but I would do it because it was important to my health, but I would have to take my klonopin first. hang in there.

I had to go to and appt last week that I desperately wanted to cancel. In the end its just a case of doing what we need to. It is the waiting that is that hard part. Can you get a friend to go with you? Maybe have a cuppa beforehand to settle into the area?

Please be careful taking old ativan (or any old meds) as they make affect you differently than you expect them to.

In the mean time try and keep your mind occupied with other things.

Take Care.

I agree, can you get a friend to go with you? You mention, that you need to go. Is it routine, or something new? Have you met, your new neurologist, yet? Maybe, you'll find something that you like about your new doctor, that you can take comfort/solace in?

about the distance to see the neurologist!

i seriously believe in learning anxiety management skills~! they are so useful in so many situations~ maybe there is a group near you, or a book you can get at the library or online~ at any rate, having skills definitely trumps not having them~!

briefly, they are:
manage your breathing, if it is rapid, breathe into a paper sack to lower oxygen uptake;

count your breaths, 1001, 1002, 1003, ect, up to 1020, then start again, slow down the count to slow your heartbeat. counting interferes with anxiety;

delay doing anything about your anxiety or panic, just follow the steps and focus on getting thru it;

distract yourself, with anything that requires you to focus and is simple and handy - at home you might read something easy, like a magazine, or knit or wash dishes, whatever engages your attention;

eat something to replenish the blood sugars that adrenelin has burned up, and give yourself at least 15 minutes for the kidneys to clean out the ashes in your blood;

write these things down and keep them with you, until you have made them a habit

practice these skills before you need them, or when you are just mildly anxious, so they will be familiar when you are feeling very upset. i hope you find this information helpful~

best wishes,
Gus
