Has anyone done it? How difficult is the process? Can you report a complaint without having to hire a lawyer or someone to officially investigate your claims? Any info is much appreciated.

You should be able to file a complaint with the licensing/regulatory agency of your state government, and/or possibly with the Attorney General or civil rights enforcement agency, depending upon the specifics. You could do any if these without an attorney.
Thanks for this!

I should file one against the hospital I just went to. Let me know if you have any luck and what the process is.

I am sure there are other ways to file a complaint against a hospital but JCAHO monitors hospitals and has the ability to force compliance.

http://www.jointcommission.org/report_a_complaint.aspx

FYI - What is JCAHO

I agree w/ Yoda...If the hospital is JCAHO accredited, they will FREAK out to have a complaint filed to them...And if it is investigated by JCAHO... <----Will be reaction of the executives & department head.

I would do it!

here in NY if you file a grievance/complaint about a hospital or other mental or physical health agency it is automatically officially investigated whether the person complaining wants an investigation or not..

where to do it....each location /state is different

here in NY complaints about hospitals are sent to and dealt with at the state health department. then they send out state health department inspectors that investigate the complaint to make sure the hospital is following state guidelines.

here in NY if a person has a complaint about a treatment provider at a hospital the complaint goes to the states ethics board that type of treatment provider...example complaints about a medical doctor goes to the office of professional conduct, a complaint about a mental health treatment provider that works in a hospital here in NY goes to the NY state office of mental health

your treatment providers can tell you what the complaint procedures are in your location.
