Has anyone thought if this? I did this years ago, but had to use a normal medical directive as the attorney I went to refused to do it for my mental health and I had to use software and modify the wording a bit.

I'm going to make a new one. Much like the old one that states that in the case I am hospitalized for MH, They are only allowed to give me benzo's or sleeping medication and that's it. No ECT, psychosurgeries and other meds without my permission. If they try to bypass this, I am going to have my sister as the person in charge of my care and she has agreed to my wishes. But, from what I can tell, it is very had to bypass a directive that you made when considered of sound mind.

How about anyone else?
Thanks for this!

A friend I know recently reminded me of this because she is bipolar and wanted to make her wishes known. Reminded me that I had done the same earlier. I actually found one n-line for my state that I could print off. It's a regular directive but also one for mental health. From what I understand, at least n this state, like it or not, they have to honor it. But I explained things to my sister who I live with and asked if she would be my legal representative if necessary and make sure my wishes were carried out. She agreed. Made me feel a lot more comfortable. I feel like I'm covered. Thanks!

Psychiatric advanced directive laws have been written in only 12 states. Good discussion:

Did you and your sister and one other witness, walk this directive down to a notary, to make it official?

Great idea!! We have directives for our physical health, never thought about MH directives, but yes, this is a good discussion!!

No, I printed the papers off but have not filled them out or signed them yet. I know I should do it quickly, but I have been so busy and procrastinated. Maybe I can find time today or tomorrow. I actually don't need my sister to be there, just a witness at AAA where I live and have it motorized it. I had hoped to hear back from my friend who was having an attorney do hers, but apparently she isn't going to get back with me and I really do need to get it done!

Thanks for the link, very interesting. That is one of the reasons my friend is doing it and why I also am going to allow my sister to make healthcare decisions for me. In the event the declaration I make is over-ridden, she knows my wishes and agrees with me about my treatment. I read somewhere ales that at anytime I choose, I can revoke. So I'm pretty comfortable with the decision.

For others interested, I googled 'Mental Health directive California' and got the website I printed off my information from.
