Hi I'm new here and have also recently been diagnosed with reccuring depression with psychosis. Does anyone have any tips on staying in 'the real world' or coming out of a psychosis quickly? I tend to slip away from reality a lot and it's really hard to function and get back into the 'real' world without doing anything dramatic i.e SI which I try not to do anymore...

Tell yourself no more episodes, take your meds see you doc and t to see where you are mentally in the real world or imagination. Our imaginations can play tricks on us i'm schitzophrenic and when i feel my mind and self getting angry at stupid things know i either need the hospital the doctor or a med change My anger gets the best of me and i get out of control when having psychosis, usually, as i said, with anger is my que. It is weird you asked this tonight because i woke u at 3am and was feeling like i needed my meds so i did take them 2 hours early, but i felt great after i took them, so you can see we do sometimes need them, not early, but just the difference it made was reassuring.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for your reply, you're the first to reply to me on anything on here You're right about the meds because as soon as I started risperidone my intrusive thoughts/voices calmed down a bit so yes, it's true, we do need the meds. I don't really have problem with anger, quite the opposite really I'm too calm and cannot get angry when I'm supposed to I only turn it inward which is no good either. I'm gonna carry on seeing my t as well because it does really help. She suggested I have to integrate my real world with the place I am when I'm having a psychotic episode to control it better. Don't know how yet though. I just kind of shut off from the real world and nothing or no one can get through to me properly and I get terrible bad thoughts. My imagination defenitely plays a lot of tricks on me. I used to have hallucinations but they have almost calmed down completely. Well done you too for taking your meds! It's not something we always want to do but I guess it's for our best, it is reassuring.

Thank you I like your tips a lot because they are things that I know work for me like lists and and I have a dog too so I do take him out for walks. I especially like your tips on the timer though I just don't know what I could put on the timer?? I have a lot of hours in the day where I'm alone and have nothing to do and just zone out and get depressed if I don't have the motivation. What kinda things do you set for your timer, any tips? Cos I think if I had a timer that snapped me back to reality sometimes it would be helpful maybe.

That's exactly what I do, my bad days I hardly remember and also if I get stressed I don't remember. I agree on that it is probably dissociation, I can't see what else it could be. Ye I used to think I was just a selective listener hehe until I realized I forget a lot more than what people say to me!

Get up at a certain time of day, every day. Even though you aren't working, and don't have much going on, you should still set a pattern for yourself. Patterns really do help most people a lot, it's a natural desire for human beings.

Set a few goals ahead of time ~ like the day (or week) before. As you meet your goals, set a check mark next to it. You can then feel a little better about what you're doing..you can say, "Today I've done x, y, and I'm going to do z later."

I would advise you to set a timer on things that you find yourself often getting lost in ~ like watching tv, or playing computer games, chatting online, etc. Try not to take naps (if you currently do). Try adding some new things to your day. Like, teaching your dog a trick or working on training. Maybe adding a new chore, keeping your place clean or learning a new recipe to cook up for others sometime.

Just some ideas that popped up in my head. ((best wishes))

Thank you so much for your tips I'm going to try them out for sure and see if it helps. I think it will. I can do these things for as long as I'm 'ok'. It's just as soon as I am in a psychosis already that it is hard to get motivated or even just get back into the real world. But I can see that I could probably prolong my 'ok' days using these tips and hopefully not have as many bad episodes. Teaching my dog a new trick is going to be towards the top of the list they are basic things but at the same time things I don't do when I'm depressed. I have to learn to make myself. I don't watch telly or play computer games, when I'm depressed I can't focus or concentrate. But I love cooking so that's also something I will try and adding a new chore...well I'm glad you can't see the state of my garden, that's going to have to be a new chore!!! lol

I use to have to set a timer in the shower or I would keep fantasizing and be late to work Figure out the times you slip the most, what you are doing then and maybe make a list of 3 things you could do instead so when you are "resting" or "doing nothing" you set a timer for every half hour or something and then the rules of the "game" are you have to do something on the list instead to make sure you don't get too far gone?

For me, exercise is a lifesaver. Even walks help, but rigorous exercise is the best. Also, focusing on the present moment; my breathing and sensations, and what is going on in my immediate surroundings. I try to make this a habit, but it is very hard to do.

yes, I know it doesn't work for everyone, I like a routine chore sometimes or physical activity, or turning on new music, a quick but easy change to help me change direction. Hoping you are doing ok!

I have an old timer and I also use my cell phone. I would say maybe journal or list, mix it up with chores or enjoyable activities, some socialization as well. Helping someone else. And tick stuff off your list. That could help on certain days. The best! Just some things that have helped me.

Dear serenity2298,
well allow me to add more input make you fell better. Collapses of the brains has bring psychosis and hallucination to the brains, its same happen to any person which has collapses of the brains. How ever to make nerve and brain back to live, they need foods. i was there in past 9 years. Now am in steady steady state. thank goodness about it. My research and logic about this illness is it is the death and collapses of brains. So i take action which i drink herbs to increase the healthiness of the brains. So right now i get good result about that. it's not Not fully recovery but it is in good state. My suggestion drink right herbs and eat medical too. Like mine is i take both but the herbs i take package herbs that a radix panax in side it. its not take long time. i think in 3 moth. The hallucination and wrong drive nerves slowly begin to reduce. That is my result. Hopefully you can get same as i do too . that's all i think for my sharing input. Hope you get same result like me to. Thank you. Take care.
