First there are lots of simple things you can do to make your home safer. Some of them are really obvious but very easy to forget.
Lock your doors when you go out and make sure you close your windows too, if your windows have locks use them. If you are at home, lock your doors if you go upstairs, the same with windows. Don't just rely on a door lock, if you have bolts &or chains use them too. If you have a garden, make sure you keep it tidy and cut back bushes that way no-one can hide there. However, have some real nice prickly shrubs underneath windows. Don't leave ladders or garden furniture outside, they could help someone climb to an upstairs window. In the evenings when it is dark, keep your curtains or blinds shut, so no-one can look through the windows to check out if you've got nice stuff in there. Always have a light on somewhere in the house if you are out when it is dark, that way it looks like someone is home. Never, ever leave you bag or car keys where they can be seen from a window (or even a letter box). Keep a look out for anyone in the neighbourhood who is acting suspiciously, trying door handles, listening at windows. If you do see anything odd, call the police. Get your neighbours to keep a lookout too. Get in touch with your local police and ask them for crime prevention advice. Your local council will have a Community Safety Team who will also have lots of crime prevention advice, see if you can find their website. I work for a Community Safety Team myself, so if you've got any specific questions send me a PM and I'll try and help.
