...depressed by not only their own issues but all the things wrong with the world? Like hunger, racism, political issues, and things that people have strong opinions on, but you are just like "why can't we all just get along?"

I avoid news stories and TV because I get too depressed reading or watching them. Is this weird?
Thanks for this!

No, this isn't weird. It happens to a lot of people. It's called universal empathy and, while the world would be a lovely place if EVERYONE had it, a lot of people don't, and being one of the ones who does sucks a lot of the time.

I've become desensitized and cynical.

I agree, and don't watch the news for that reason. My husband tries to tell me "news" items sometimes and remind that's why don't read the paper or watch the news. It just adds to my depression.

My husband does this as well. He thinks I "overreact." It makes me mad, and I hate the true life murder mysteries he watches. I personally think it's not normal to watch that crap and not be distributed.

I watch news, talk shows, and read. I get depressed by some stories, and usually angry. I don't avoid watching serious topics, because I think it's important to be educated and informed. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." - Edmund Burke

As for your opinion, thinkntired, I disagree. People who are interested in true crimes aren't necessarily disturbed. Just like horror, which I love. Thank goodness there are people interested in true crimes, or they wouldn't get solved (no police or detectives), and we wouldn't know much about criminals' psychology (psychologists wouldn't have been interested in finding out), which may lead us, one day, to be able to stop them before they hurt someone.

I think while we can all get down about the state of the world, and all the suffering, but its important to keep perspective. No one changes these things except people like you and me. By completely ignoring these issues you do your fellow man a disservice. Buck up and face reality! Or not, hey just trying to offer a different perspective! To answer your question, I would everybody dials this stuff out to some degree. We all have different tolerances for this stuff I think, and it varies as time goes by.

I've seriously wondered if I was the only one! Don't know if its weird, but its not weird to me. I get so upset over these kinds of things that i've limited my news watching. It sucks that my family is actually composed of said "strong opinioned" people. It drives me insane and sometimes triggers me.

It's not weird at all! I do the same thing. Occasionally, I'll read something or watch the news to know what's going on in the world, but the information I learn often just makes me question everything and wonder why certain things happen.
