I found this video...I'm kind of confused...is this video really a good example of what hearing internal voices is like? I thought everyone heard this kind of internal verbalization. Or is it an example of mental illness because the voices are other people talking, not his own voice? Anyone have any feedback?

sorry - anything with "CNN" in it - I find to be highly suspect. But at least it was not MSNBC.

Hello Sister Rags: I've often wondered what the experience of hearing voices would be like. I don't hear voices. I do have tinnitus. So I experience a constant whistling sound. I also have a continuous stream of negative thoughts running through my mind. But I know they are my thoughts, not something that is external to me. Occasionally when I'm in the shower or perhaps doing laundry, something where my hearing is impeded by some kind of noise, I'll think I hear voices in the house. I can't tell what they're saying. But it is kind-of disturbing because I know there shouldn't be anyone else here. It does tend to tweak a streak of not too serious paranoia that rears its head in certain situations, especially if I'm physically impeded such as with severe low back pain which I get from time-to-time.

Maybe that sound is not in your head. MAYBE you are really hot and someone is whistling AT you.

Maybe that's why this post took so long to get any responses. No, this is not about "news"...I would have posted it on the Current News board. For some strange reason, it's hard for people to click a link. But this one is worth clicking, especially for any of us who have mental illness issues.

Oooh, tinnitus sounds miserable. I'm so sorry you have it.

I guess it is the "I'm hearing my own voice or having a memory of someone I know speaking" as opposed to "this is not a voice I recognize as someone I know". I'm definitely confused...well, scared I guess...because I do hear voices in my head, and the voices are not someone I know. Sometimes they are horribly frightening, other times very comforting. I've told p-docs...they don't seem to pay much attention to it, although it might be a reason I'm on Seroquel.

Yes, tinnitus can be REALLY awful! I've experienced it. Fortunately at this point, the level of sound is low enough that, for the most part, it's not too bad. Other sounds tend to drown it out for the most part except for times such as when I'm awake in bed at night & everything is quiet. I could play music or a nature sounds audio CD or something, but I don't.

Speaking of awful... hearing unfamiliar, horribly frightening voices sounds pretty awful to me. I do know what you're saying as far as pdoc's go. It's frustrating when you tell them about something like this & they just seem to ignore you. I've had that experience as well.

I think I need to say it a bit louder - like, HEY I HEAR THESE SCARY VOICES.

I'm surprised this thread doesn't have more feedback on it. For those of you who hear voices, is the video an accurate one?

I also have tinnitus, that has gotten much worse. For me this was a reason to complain because it is now loud enough that when there is loud external noise I can still hear it, and many different very high pitches. I watched this video, and now have to realize its better to have constant tinnitus than voices that say things all the time.
I'm wondering if this is a true depiction of what it is like to hear voices. Would they be all muddled together like they showed, or would it just be an occasional comment or voice you hear? My niece hears voices, but I can't imagine being able to survive for a day, if it was like what Anderson was listening to. I feel like this must be an exaggeration. ? Seems like it would be impossible to live with.
Does medication eliminate the voices, or does it just lessen how much you hear it SisterRags? thanks for the link, makes me more aware of what it must be like
