Does a psychiatrist just ask you questions or do you take tests? What's it take to get a diagnosis?

It can be both asking questions and taking tests. It depends on what the doc thinks might be wrong. For example, if the doc thinks you are depressed they are probably going to talk to you and take a detailed history of what's going on. They might or might not give you a written test for depression. Conversely, if the doc believes there is something like dementia going on they are likely to ordered tests, both written and medical, to help with the diagnosis.

What is going on that you ask?

I can only speak to my experience, but I was asked a lot of questions, and my diagnosis changed a bit as time went on, more things got added.

There are some online tests Psychological Tests and Quizzes but they not 100% accurate, and clearly they can't prescribe medications or give you any therapy.

I want to be treated for a mental illness such as Depression and possibly another condition because I know I'm not as positive and normal as other people. I feel like I'm... special, but I can't be 100% sure on that.

From my experience a diagnosis emerges from the specific symptoms and their impact on your functioning in key areas of life (career/school, social, family, e.t.c.)
