Do you ever feel as if you're not real? Or, at least not a real person? I don't really know how to explain the feeling, but it's quite weird, ya know?

Yep, DoggieDad. I have felt that way. It even has a name - depersonalization. How is it affecting you?

There have been many times that I question (in my head - usually not made know to anyone) that if what I am seeing/living/experiencing is not real. That maybe either I am already dead or maybe imagining whatever is going on.

I guess you could say tons of surreal feelings

Surreal is the exact term! Thanks, IDM (you DO matter).

Well, lizardlady, I'm bouncing between a couple of issues. If I'm not real, then what my brother did isn't real, either. Or, if I'm not real, then no one will miss me if I'm not here. I think.

A feeling of not feeling real can be a symptom of a mental illness. You might want to do some reading in the DSM book/web site. You might want to discuss your feelings with a psychiatrist or counselor. I don't know all the right terms. Perhaps "disassociative" might be one of the relevant terms.

Yes, I have struggled with derealization for many years. There is a forum online, it might help you: Depersonalization Community

I get treated as though I'm not a real person, but I don't think that's the same thing.

I remember feeling that way when I was growing up....but that feeling was totally different than the feeling I had after the trauma of depersonalization.....that is like being out of your body & watching yourself function & talk & not really knowing how it happens & .....for me there was a REAL difference between those 2 feelings
