Last night around 1:00 a.m. (morning actually) I was getting ready for bed when I heard my 25 year old son jump up out of his bed and run out of the house in his pj's. I ran to see what was going on. I saw emergency lights flashing on the street.
He had heard windows exploding and looked out to see the house across the street on fire. I was so afraid that he would run into that house in an effort to save someone. I immediately yelled at my husband to get up and put his pants on and follow Andy. In the meantime, I grabbed Andy's coat and mine and headed for the door. About that time Andy called me on his cell. He had the good sense to grab his cell phone so he could call 911 as he ran toward the burning house. He said he was on his way back to get his shoes. A police officer had arrived and kicked the door in. Andy also woke the neighbor to the burning house because flames were close to their home. When I caught up with Andy and gave him his coat he said he thought he heard a baby crying. I felt sick! Fortunately, it turned out that the family was gone and there was no baby but there was a cat. One of the fireman got the cat out safely. The house is demolished and the neighbors house lost the siding on that end of their house. We heard from a friend with a scanner that the house flared up again around 5 a.m but we slept through that. What a night! I definitely had to take my anxiety meds. to get to sleep.

How scarey and exciting! The power of fire is an awesome site.... lived in a small town in MO where everyone who lived there was immediately a member of the volunteer fire dept and expected to be seen at any house/barn fire. I finally figured out why these men hung a winter coat in their trucks even during the summer when it was 105 degrees! The heat from a barn fire will burn you 50 yards away.
I'm sorry the neighbor's house burned, and am curious as to why. Glad the kitty cried loud enough... Yay Firemen!

So scary. The house next to me caught on fire once, and it is an unforgettable experience. I am so glad your son didn't rush in there, and all of you are safe.

OMG, how horrible. I am so thankful that no one got hurt.
Your son was so brave in going over there and alerting your neighbors of the fire. It could have been their house also, so easily. Glad everyone is OK. Gosh, your heart must have been just pounding after that. Hugs, Boopers

It took a long time for the three of us to settle down and get some sleep later that night. I'm proud of my son for what he did and for the fact that he didn't go charging into that burning house. I was so afraid when he went running out of our house.
It looks like the fire may have started in the furnace/hot water closet in the middle of the house. The house is about 30 years old and I don't think those things had ever been replaced.
