I've wondered for quite some time. I have a deep fascination with fire, I like being around bonfires, striking matches, lighting candles etc.. I would never do something stupid like purposely set the house on fire.
Today my mum found out because I hadn't properly cleared the kitchen of the candle smell. I always light matches safely, I don't go near wood and usually do it near the sink and keep my sleeves away from the fire, tie my hair back. I was quite upset when she told me off for doing this to cure boredom and I feel miserable because I probably can't do it again without getting caught. I hadn't done it for months, yet this one time she just had to find out. I understand her concern and I know its probably not the safest habit, but the way she approached me made me feel small and scared. I am quite sensitive to being told off, which I know sounds childish, but it makes me feel terrible for a really long time and I can never stop thinking about it. ![]() |

From Merriam-Webster:
py·ro·ma·nia noun \ˌpī-rō-ˈmā-nē-ə, -nyə\ : a mental illness that makes people have a strong desire to set fires There's a big difference between fascination and and compulsion. I remember loving candles, bonfires, playing with matches. I have never burned anything down or hurt anyone other than once I burned my hand badly on fireworks. If this becomes troublesome, you will need help. Be very, very careful with fire. You mother is trying to protect you and others. When you get your own place, you can do whatever you want. ![]()

Yeah. I love a beautiful contained fire as well, it is magical. Nothing better on a snowy winter night than lighting the fireplace in my bedroom and snuggling in a warm bed with the dog curled up at my feet. Candles, too, both for sight and fragrance.
A pyromaniac sets destructive dangerous fires to satisfy psychological urges. Way different than enjoying a nice bonfire or scented candles as you soak in a hot bathtub or lining your driveway with luminaries on Christmas Eve. Mom needs to chill out. |
