yep. i suggest making a map of the villages and the sewers / caves etc as you go. took me a little while to figure that YES it really was necessary to make a map.

it will take a bit to download, but there is quite a bit to the game. it has a fairly extensive map (with lots of villages and houses and shops and people to talk to etc) so it is really very helpful to know where people are (for when you need to find them again). and it is very unlikely that you will manage to navigate the sewer enough to get the treasure without a map (you will probably just run around in circles).

yeah the graphics are a bit budget (2d) but i guess the game is pretty old now (and not to mention free). it is similar to heroes (if anyone got into the heroes RPG's). you start with a wizard and a fighter and a thief... and it is kind of a puzzle where you have to figure out what to do next (at times). there is an old message board and if you check the archives someone is bound to have asked about where you are stuck (if you get stuck). there isn't a walkthrough and you can't get maps but there is a bit of help on the forum...

Sounds similar to Zork. Think I'll download it and see. Thanks.

Wow. Okay, so I'm really very impressed with the game. It was made by some students (to see whether they could do it with some programming language or something like that). The graphics limitations turned out to be limitations of whatever it was that they were using.

But in terms of gameplay... It really is pretty darned terrific. I keep finding more to it... I don't think that the forums are active anymore but you can get the general gist of other things (such as trying to find set up and then use the portals to travel between distant locations and finding the elemental orbs). I found the green one woo hoo!

There are bridge points as well (where which choice you make opens up a different plot structure). But then they converge again... And then bridge again... So you can play the game over and over to try and see all there is to see.

Did anyone play the Heroes RPG? I was terribly addicted to one of them for a while. I think it was the 7th one. Later ones were much better with respect to graphics and had a number of nice features (such as a more detailed map that told you what the building was once you had been to it and your journal updated with the boat schedule and the like so you don't have to take such extensive notes) but they simply weren't as addictive with respect to gameplay and the map wasn't as extensive because I guess they put most of the work into the graphics.

But this one is terribly addictive... Though I do feel a little nauseous when I spend too many hours running across the countryside searching for the damned portals... Sigh... I've made a pact with myself that I shall work for 5 hours today and as a reward I'm allowed to play the game tonight!

i've been purposely avoiding runescape because if i start playing i suspect i'll never finish my thesis. i've heard it is pretty amazing though. have a friend back home who is really into it. she said that she never understood what i got out of posting on message boards (with respect to how involved you can get with dramas and the like) until she started playing runescape.

i also read something a little while ago now (not sure if i could find it again) about (arguably) the first case of adult onset DID that had ever been reported. the girl was from germany and she was totally addicted to some online game (might have been runescape) and she developed alternative identities based around her characters after 6 months continual gameplay. it is arguable whether it is a 'genuine' case (though she surely met criteria). she got better pretty fast with treatment... lol. i'll check it out after i finish my thesis though. thanks for the link.
