Out loud or in your head? I do both, but mainly in my head. Or I talk to the dogs, which is essentially the same thing. At least they haven't talked back YET. ;-)
I think it's fairly normal to talk to yourself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Oh heck yes! I talk to myself. I talk to the critters. I talk to inanimate objects some times! You know, like a stuck jar lid? I can have a whole conversation with myself! ![]() |

I have a picture in my head of my mother getting a saucepan and lid from the cupboard, everything used to rattle and she would tell 'them' to shut up! I used to laugh, but now I do it.
I do have phases when I talk to myself out loud (I'm alone a lot). Then I'll get out of the habit. But it always comes back...

All the time and I don't think there's a thing wrong with it! I also answer for my puppies, when they aren't up to it lol Perfectly normal!

I have imaginery conversations with people who are real but not present and imaginery conversations with people who are imaginery. I only speak my side of the dialogue, the voices of the other conversationalists are in my head. These one sided conversations are out loud and often in public, though I try to avoid talking to myself where I will be overheard. Hands free headsets means loads of people apparently talk to themselves in public, much louder and far more randomly than my solitary efforts.
Talking to dogs and pets and wild animals doesn't count in my book because they are sentient and can hear, even if their response is non verbal. |

If one has a yen for talking when no one else is around, what else might you do?

I do the exact same thing. I'll talk to the people in my imaginations, my dog, my cat, myself, my own consciousness...I don't do it around family, though.

Yes. Mostly inside my head but out loud at times. I have a tendency to chide myself, and when I do, it comes out the way parents use a kid's full name when the kid is really in trouble. So I find myself saying something like, "Good job, Angelene ___ ___! You really f***** up this time!"
I don't know why; my parents didn't use my full name like that... Also, I agree with TheOriginalMe about sentient beings. But I do talk to inanimate objects. Hell, I name certain inanimate objects like my car, computer, cell phone and so on. I believe lots of people talk to "themselves" and this thread backs me up. ![]()

I used to talk to myself a lot right before I fell asleep, making up youtube videos and stories xD. I guess it's my me time and gives the illusion that I am not alone. ![]() |

I hear a lot of voices but I quit answering them when my Risperidone was increased.
However, I still call people names who are not in the room with me. |

All the time. Had a T tell me once that talking to yourself was the only good way to have an intelligent conversation

I have conversations with myself on a daily basis, in my head and out loud (not when people are around of course) I find it healthy.

I do, that is how I learn. I'm studying epidemiology and I think its a way to convey and internalize meaning and thought. My family and others think its weird too.

I find it a bit humorous to ask this question in a MI forum lol. Might as well ask us if we drink water
![]() My answer, yes, all the time out loud and to myself. |

I'm with Liz.....living alone, I talk to a lot of stuff around me including myself when I get aggravated at something. You should hear what I have to say to those 2 bolts on my EGR valve on my truck that I'm trying to replace & can't get loose.....the last 2 bolts between having my truck sitting useless in my front yard & being able to fix it & drive again.
The one thing that does bother me & that I never realized before I was a music major years ago is that words & phrases have sounds & rythms....but it works in the reverse...sounds have rythms which can be heard as words & phrases & I have this dang noisy ceiling fan in my kitchen.....it drives me nuts working in the kitchen & hearing the noise turn into sounds & rythms which turn into words & phrases & it's strange because even though it's the same sound & rythm, my mind can hear different words & phrases.......I'm not hearing voices....& I know exactly where it's coming from.....& the ceiling fan isn't talking to me. I remember in my college music class when we were learning rythms & how when writing songs the words have rythm.....it's all very understandable....it's just annoying because right now I don't want to turn off the fan as my kitchen but it does get annoying hearing that continual sound enveloping my kitchen between JoGI's barking

Yes and always have - occasionally catch others at it and rather enjoy their discomfort (I am so horrid), no idea how widespread, but my understanding is that it is normal and common. However I am told that speaking back to yourself in daydreams is more sinister - look at Gollum.

I never talk to myself. Out loud - nearly never. Maybe rarely when I'm looking for something, like where is [...], and someone* is there who could actually respond to my question - otherwise never.
*someone other than myself Of course I occasionally talk to my cat, cat recognizes tone of voice and is able to 'respond' with vocalization which is pretty amazing and amusing. Unfortunately cat can't advice on seemingly lost things I'm looking for. This cannot corroborate my cat-person theory, looks like I have a problem. |

I talk to myself a lot...sometimes I even use a rather obnoxious british accent, not that such accents are obnoxious in general(I don't think so) but the one I will talk to myself in is lol. I also talk to my cats and I have talked to plenty of dogs not that animals talk back but they do have their own way to communicate and they seem to acknowledge when you are talking to them even if they don't know quite what you're saying.
I have talked to the wind when trying to light a cigarette for instance and it keeps blowing the flame out before I can...as if any amount of asking the wind to quit will make any difference.
