Hi whitered123, welcome to the forum. I am sorry you are having this experience and that you are finding it frightening. How long has it been happening? It sounds like some sort of visual hallucination. The only way to find out for sure what is happening is to see a doctor, who will probably refer you to a psychiatrist.

I believe some physical conditions can cause this too, so they will want to rule those out first.

A lot of people do have these kind of hallucinations (including me). The first step is to see your GP. Once you know what is causing it, you can have appropriate treatment.

Meanwhile you can get support and advice on this forum.

Please don't be scared, they're not real. I take a radio to bed to distract me, it sometimes works to stop my hallucinations. And leave a small light on.

Goldcrest

Hello whitered123: This is really something you need to discuss with a professional, either your family physician, a therapist, or a psychiatrist. This does not sound at all stupid & you are not going insane. But there is something going on, & you need the help of a professional to figure out what it is & what should be done about it.

Presently I have a kidney stone I'm trying to pass. And so I've had to go to a urologist for help figuring out what needs to be done. Your situation isn't substantially different. Please don't feel so embarrassed or ashamed that you don't get the professional help you need. My best wishes to you...

P.S. Welcome to PsychCentral!

I have had these kinds of hallucinations too. My psychiatrist says they are common. I am on a few different medications but I still get the hallucinations now and then. Nightmares too, and night terrors.

I was taking Risperidone for hallucinations but it never seemed very effective, so I checked for interactions on drugs.com and found that the Tegretol I was taking reduced the effectiveness of Risperidone. An increase in my dosage of Risperidone fixed the problem very quickly.

Doctors & pharmacists don't always check for side effects!

Is it only in the dark when you see them? For the time being maybe leaving a lamp or some kind of light on when you go to bed would help..but it certainly is something worth looking into and getting professionally assessed if its bothering you. I do not experience that, have on occasions seen things that aren't there but not as much as you mention and in my case I think not getting enough sleep plays into it.

Keeping lights on seems like a good idea.

Are you scared you see and hear things that aren't there,
or scared of what friends and family might say/think of it,
or there are other options?

Content of what you see and hear (people dancing and laughing) doesn't seem scary to me, happy rather.

Hi again Whitered123

Reading your latest description of what you see, I have had something similar, seeing a group of people at a distance, that seemed to be sitting round a table, like in a cafe, talking together though I couldn't hear them. They didn't seem aware of me. I didn't mind them, but there were others who would come around my head while I was lying down who were aware of me, I didn't like that at all.

I think when it doesn't bother you it is not a problem. But seeing as it does, you can get help with this. You don't have to put up with it.

I don't have any experience with what is happening with you, but I would just like to suggest a visit to the doctor to get some basic medical tests done to see if there is anything medical going on like blood sugar, blood pressure, heart, etc.

They cannot hurt you. Have had many experiences. See these as gifts. Human kind is going through many changes. My hounds give me great comfort. Maybe you go on a walk and a stone attracts you. Maybe you find a new tea, perhaps an exchange has a perfect hat. Maybe use a mantra, "my creator loves me now as I love myself", don't need a religion to believe you are perfectly created. You are very strong, I know this to be true.

I had one incident of night terrors and when I googled I came up with "shadow people". In google images, that was exactly what it looked like.

It was the single most terrifying experience of my life. I was glad to know that I wasn't alone....(don't ever want it to happen again and my sympathies to anyone that's experienced it).

From what I have read it's a kind of sleep paralysis...
