I saw yet another news segment about the pet food recalls, and this one was about how many pet owners are turning to making their own dog and cat food. They offered a really good bit of advice, and I thought I'd share it with you:

Before you start making your own pet food, you should consult your veterinarian, to make sure you meet your pet's nutritional needs. Each type of animal, and each breed of animal, has its own nutritional needs. You also want to be sure of the right amount to feed your pet.

You shouldn't feed your pet the same thing every day. Just like you and me, if your dog eats boiled chicken and rice every day, they'll start having health problems due to a lack of nutrients they can't get from that particular meal.

Even when you follow pet food recipes you find online or in books, you should check the nutrition information.

Here's a link that was on the news to some pet food recipes:

How to Make Your Own Pet Food Recipes - Besides dog and cat recipes, it includes one for budgie owners! (I'm not too sure about the "chicken soap" recipes, though...chicken soap doesn't sound too good, LOL!)

Yes, but again, you should consult your vet to make sure you're giving your pets the right nutrients.

I hate cooking, but I'd cook for them if I didn't feel store-bought or other prepared food wasn't safe.

Maven, i contacted my veterinarian back in the 1970s about what to cook for them. AND i still have the lists of foods that he researched and gave to me.......and i still use it with addons from more vets over the years.

i started when i began rescuing greyhounds from tracks.

i'd hate to think that you think i just started throwing stuff in a pot and feeding it to them. Pet Food Advice (Nothing Bad)

It's wonderful that you rescued greyhounds. My parents plan to adopt a greyhound after dad retires in May. My mum has been talking about it for years. Pet Food Advice (Nothing Bad)

Pat, I didn't think you were improperly feeding your dogs, not at all. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew to consult their vet for each of their pets, because one dog or cat might need different nutrients than another, plus may have special dietary needs due to a medical condition.

I love the greyhound rescue organizations. They make wonderful pets, I hear. Once we move, and when I'm well enough, I want to get a dog. May be a greyhound, you never know. But I'll get one from a shelter or from someone who can't care for theirs anymore. So many animals need good homes.
