Does anybody drive a scooter? I'm thinking of trading my car in for a scooter. What's it like to ride a scooter in traffic? Does it work in the freezing weather?

I drive a small motorcycle. No, it is horrible in the winter and in the rain. I have a car too...I could not imagine just driving my motorcycle. Oh, wait I can...at one point in time I was somewhat homeless and all I had was a motorcycle--it was horrible. I would have much preferred a car--then I would have had a safer place to sleep. But, at least I had a motorcycle. And, I have had several close calls and one accident on the motorcycle--it seems cars just don't pay attention to motorcycles--I can only assume a scooter would be even worse.

Pickle -- I, too, am thinking about getting a scooter. The high speed for a scooter is not fast enough to drive on the Turnpike or I-95, our interstates where speeds can reach 80 and beyond. A 150 cc scooter tops out at 55-60, although I've read a few people claiming to get 65.

I would be confined to "surface roads" and would use it mostly for local errands. We have a 6-month hurricane/rainy season, and I would be miserable riding a scooter in this weather, even though it generally is warm enough. So I would plan to keep my aging car.

A scooter gets 80 mpg and the best hybrid gets 50 mpg on the open road. I hate the thought of driving a car without standard transmission, and of course the hybrids rely on automatic transmission for the automatic fuel savings.

If you carefully consider how much you will be able to use your scooter, you may be happy with it. Some have three wheels, which make them more stable.

Yeah, I do admit my motorcycle is nice to run errands on...I don't remember what kind of gas miliage I get, but it is way better than a car. And, there is the fun factor! Riding a cycle or scooter is just plain fun!

i've always wanted a scooter, and when I lived and worked in the same small town, it would have been ideal to ride to work, but now, having moved, it is impractical.
I love the Vespa scooter!

A Vespa is very stylish. A 150cc costs around $5K, compared with other brands, where you can get them for about $1500.
