I posit the question about what the advantage is to having your diagnoses and medications in your signature?

Opinions for and against, why?

It gives people a quick frame of reference.
Thanks for this!

I am not for or against it. In one side, it’s a good way for others (especially new members) to know that they are not alone. That we are in this together. In the other side, it makes some people feel like they are defined by their diagnosed. But the site gives us an option anyway, if people want to put it on their profile, then they can do it. If they don’t, there is an option “rather not say”.

I don't like it because I want people to talk to me and get to know me,
I never put my diagnoses in my signature because I feel it makes other people's work easier and then they may not talk to me because they know a lot about me already
Thanks for this!

It's because I get tired having to write what I take and how much over and over.

It's also to see if ones on what meds because most are having issues with what they are taking.

I'm also an "open book" and don't mind.

Another is to "explain" my crazy! :P

I get why people do it--for all of the reasons mentioned above. I just don't do it and I don't post everything on my profile, either. I've seen this information tossed back at people in a malicious way--very rarely, but I've seen it. And I don't really want to set myself up for that. Most of the time, I wouldn't give a rip but every so often, I may be in a place where that would really hurt me.

I am a fairly open book in the forums, and if people want to know more, they are welcome to ask.
Thanks for this!

I feel it tells people up front what I struggle with so if they have questions they can ask. I think it shows me to be more open about what I deal with. I don't like asking people personal questions so if it's not in their signature I'm afraid to ask.

i do it because i want people to understand me and not abuse me because im slow at processing language, think and communicate differently and have severe trouble interacting one on one.
ive had A LOT of trouble getting understood on forums, and have had A LOT of abuse,by explaining in my signitature i have severe autism and mild intelectual disability it helps lower the level of abuse towards me and it can increase understanding and support when im not understanding something.

it makes sense to put your diagnoses and meds in your signature, people might be able to dcompare themselves and get help from you;they may just want a friend they can compare with.i wont put my meds in my signature as im on to many.

I understand. I feel like I would like to see other things about people...maybe in addition. I myself choose not to do this.

I am not my diagnosis and my meds are all PRN.....my many, many meds......so it wouldn't be helpful for someone to judge me on a medication I may not have taken for months.

Well, that and I rarely ask questions. Yet. I'm just not comfortable.

I put my diagnoses and medication in my signature. I do it because it's easier for me not to repeat myself (though I do a lot) and so it's easier for people to relate other people in general. Like, as another poster said, so it doesn't make you feel alone. I know many people get attached to labels (which I am finding myself starting to do), but I don't think it's the label that matters, it's what you make out of the person who deals with something like that everyday. It's kinda like wearing one of those medical bracelets to let other people know in case of an emergency. I do it just in case I do something wrong in my opinion so people don't get mad at me. I am very submissive and angry people make this trait show out and I get super anxious. Anyways, this is my opinion on it. Oh ya, also, so people know what medication you are/have been on and to ask how you reacted to it and what you found out about that medication. It helps people understand a bit. Though it is explained everyone reacts differently to medication but.

I'm neither for, nor against it. I'm just too damn lazy to create a signature, really.

I don't have meds, but I do have diagnosis. I feel like it explains where I am coming from, so to speak.

I wasn't diagnosed for so long, I felt it explained so much when I finally received a diagnosis. It explained a lot of my life.

I really could care less what meds your on. It doesn't tell me anything about you except your on certain meds. My meds are between me and my Dr.!

Also I could give a damn about your diagnosis. People are getting pigeonholed too easily nowadays. It's like , WOW this dumb ***** Dr. told me I have BPD or whatever. I still feel like s*** but at least I know that I have BPD ! YEA !

I often wondered why people do it, and agree with the reasons for being for and against it.

I am too lazy to do it myself, though if I did, I probably wouldn't see too much of an issue. My diagnoses are on my profile anyway.

In terms of being attacked by someone for what it is I have to say, and knowing my "weaknesses," I really don't care. I can utilize my "weaknesses" as a strength. If you think someone is already crazy, why mess with them? But I digress. I'm in a much better place now than I was when I first joined almost six years ago. Things roll off ^~^ #rambles

Hee hee.

I'm not bothered about anyone knowing my conditions....it's been a lifetime so that it doesn't matter much to us anymore.

By putting everything down there I hope that it explains myself, like why there are so many differing posts and points of views off this one account. I let you in on a little secret...it's called multiple personalities. It's something that we used to hide, but hiding is the reason why we've suffered for so long.

I realized it would be helpful to be able to search the forums for people whosesignatures mention medicines I'm considering, and asking folks about their experiences on those meds.
