My therapist says I dissociate sometimes, and I didn't know what it was until I asked, but now I realize that I do. But it's hard to pinpoint sometimes what is and what isn't a dissociation. Sometimes I feel far away and I feel like there's pressure all around me, especially inside my head, and I can't focus on what anyone is saying to me. Sometimes when I'm like that I get really clumsy, almost light-headed. Is that a form of dissociation?

Other times I space out entirely and don't hear anything going on around me. I'll feel like I have no control over my words, and if I'm talking it will sound to me like I'm listening to someone else.

I get like that, dissociation is generally triggered to happen.

When I dissociate, I become dazed and foggy minded.

According to what your T says and the way that you describe it, I'd say yes it is. Welcome to the club!
Thanks for this!

What is the main reasoning of dissociation? Is it from anxiety or stress? I get like this sometimes so I was just curious.

I find I do it more with certain people. People who can really chat, I go off to my own world.

And one more question. Can you be aware it is happening but unable to mentally correct it? I feel STUCK mentally and I can't determine how long I was doing it.

Good questions! I'd like to find out too.

I think that it's more of an escape mechanism.

And I can recognize it while I'm doing it but unable to bring myself out of it. It depends on how deep my mind has dissociated.

dissociation happens for many reasons...sometimes its trauma, sometimes its stress, sometimes its just the normal way the brain works. short version dissociation is a reaction to a positive or negative trigger, event and gosh knows what else. for everyone its different what will cause a person to feel spaced out, foggy minded, disconnected (in other words dissociated)

if you feel you are dissociating you can contact a treatment provider who will assess whether it is normal or a dissociative disorder (for america those are listed in the link at the bottom of my post)
Thanks for this!
