Looking on the internet for an "organic" way to get rid of ants, I came across something that caught my eye; a mixture of boric acid, sugar and water as a bate. <font color=red>BORIC ACID??</font color=red> My mom used to use that as an eye wash. Right there, under the skull and cross bones it says "DO NOT USE IN THE EYES!" You're also supposed to rinse your hands for about 15 minutes if it gets on your skin!! What was my mother thinking?? How come neither she nor her mother go blind?? How come they didn't lose chunks of their skin when they mixed the stuff?? OH!! MY!! GOD!!

Chill, sweetheart! She wasn't insane nor hostile for this. Even today a form of boric acid can be found in the fake tears solutions.... it has an antifungal activity and is useful for many body problems... but certainly not in the form used to kill ants!

Well, I know she wasn't insane or hostile, but I also remember them squeezing lemon juice into their eyes when they were out of boric acid!! Now that was freakin' painful!!
![]() I guess I'm just freaking that they could have gotten themselves really sick or lost their eyesight... and also "reeeeeely" glad that I didn't pick up the habit! ![]() LOL I always thought boric acid was a medicine! But I guess like any other medicine it can also be a poison as the crossbones and skull depict. Wonder if they appeared on the packaging way back then? Guess what my dear mom also almost did one time? She was out of laurel leaves and just about went out to the front yard and picked a couple leaves off the oleander bush! (It's called Laurel in Spanish) She would have surely killed us! Maybe we did have a guardian angel among us as hard as it is for me to believe. I should be thankful instead of freaking, eh? ![]() ![]() <font color=blue>"Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt" --Shakespeare</font color=blue>

Wait -- how often does anyone wash their eyes?? Is that something I've been supposed to be doing and after 34 years I'm just finding this out???? I've never washed my eyes before, except as part of washing my face!
We are ALL going to be a-ok!

LOLOL I don't know anyone anymore that washes their eyeballs, for Pete's sake!! LOL You know how about two generations ago people did weird things?? Well, at least my mom and her mom did.
![]() But you know? I've been buying some pieces of depression glass and I've found the little eye wash glasses for sale! Honest Injun! So I guess it wasn't only my family of origin that did weird things like that! And Boric Acid, well... it always mean "good" to me and now I find out it's a deadly poison! LOL Don't worry about not washing your eyes. I don't either. I just use drops once in a while when I pet my cat and then touch my eyes. It stops them from itching. I'm gonna have to check and see if they have Boric Acid in them! YIKES!! LOL This is all getting too funny! ![]() <font color=blue>"Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt" --Shakespeare</font color=blue>

Two generations from now what weird things will our grandchildren say that we did?

LOL What do you foresee, Dave? That we won't be able to go outside anymore because of the ozone layer therefore school will be taught through computer and all the green plants will have been burned up? YIKES! Naaah... we can't live without green plants! I suppose by then, we'll have our meals come out of a bottle in pill form. Can you imagine??? I can't! (as I sit here eating a midnight snack of corn dogs! LOL)

Lawdy! And your friend still has her/his hearing???
EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, GROSS is right!!! My ex-husband used to blow cigarette smoke into our daughter's ear when her ear hurt. I could never see what good it would do except make it feel warm and smell stinky! LOL But I guess compared to urine, it had to smell good! LOL OMG!! ![]() <font color=blue>"Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt" --Shakespeare</font color=blue>

I'm familiar with boric acid as an ingredient in ant/roach products. Can't say that I'm familiar with the use as an eye wash, though! I think the eye ph and everything would be an instant no-no to using boric acid in the eye. I could see it doing a lot of damage, from how I see things. Maybe if it was mixed with something to dilute and lessen the strength of it, though, I don't know. I haven't read any other's posts on this yet, but maybe someone else has heard of something.
