I have a question for all. Is it good mental hygiene to abstain from alcohol? Just wondering what the best advice/general consensus is.

This is just my opinion, but if you are on psychiatric meds, than yes it is probably best to abstain from alcohol, as it can affect how they work. If you're not on medication, then I see no harm in drinking moderately. Obviously if you are an alcoholic, then abstinence is the best choice.

My mother is in end-stage alcoholism. Her mental health has severely deteriorated and is now in the first stages of alcohol induced dementia. And that is apart from being depressed. She has gone from being a strong woman to a needy, clingy child. She doesn't remember much of anything from day to day. And I've watched her lose basic words from her vocabulary. It is like a light just went out. Alcohol has ruined my mother - not only physically, but mentally as well.

This sounds just like my mother right now, and I'm only 19... She is not the same woman who raised me. She is clingy and needy, like you said, and I've had to shoulder a lot of that burden on my own. I hate to say this as I know it will make me out to be a *****, but I resent her. She just doesn't care anymore and it disgusts me. I don't know what to do with her anymore.

It really depends upon the individual, but generally alcohol is a depressant, and can cause issues with people prone to MI. I personally stopped drinking because of my meds.

It's ok to have a drink now and then. Where the danger comes in is if you can't control your drinking.
