A fellow homeless person walked in front of the express train about a half-hour ago at the Metra station across the street from where I am. I am inside the library, so I didn't see it. I can't believe it! If it's the "Joe" who I think it is, he was a friend. I can't believe this! I need to find out if it was him or not!

Thank you, everyone--IT WAS HIM! IT WAS MY FRIEND!! He'd been coming to me sometimes for "counseling". He was alcoholic and wanted me to help him. He had been drinking all day and was drunk tonight--it wasn't suicide--or it doesn't appear to be. I'm in shock.

Inky,

How sad......I'm sure it makes it even harder for you when you knew him well enough for him to come to you about things....you probably knew a bit more about him than anyone.

It is so sad when the choices we make & the conditions we are in & stay in end up like this in a tragedy.....a senseless death from too much drinking. I hope there is someone for you to talk to......hope you don't go where some might go, feeling that they could have made a difference.....because that is never the case in situations like this.

It hurts to loose someone to a senseless death.....hope you will be ok,
Debbie

Some of us have gathered. I will be going back soon. I can't believe this. (!!!) I am leaving/sending messages to everybody. I am venting this so much, however I can. I even abused the online messaging system for my primary doctor to vent this. I don't need anything from him. I just need to vent/talk/get this shock out about what happened. He and I talked this morning--my friend and I. He was happy. He had started drinking by then. He tried to hide the can in his jacket. I gave him friendship that he wanted, and needed--I gave him support--He was starting to believe in himself that he could be well again, and healthy, and quit drinking.

That's terrible news. My deepest condolences to you. You did your part in his life and he will have taken your kind words with him in his heart.

Thank you for all the kind words. It really means a lot to me. I think I am doing better, but still in shock. I had heart problems with chest pain, very low pulse, and raised blood pressure, and was awake all night. Its feeling a little better this morning, but creeping back toward what it was.

This is a link to an article about the accident by the Sun-Times:
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/5...081707.article

FWIW, the version by Tribune has errors in that he was NOT riding a bike, and they listed an address for a homeless man! If you want to read their article, here it is:

After we talked in the morning, the last thing we did was hugged. He was grateful for my friendship, and helping him. Wish I could have seen him after that, before it happened.
