Has anyone ever heard/read this book? I picked it up a long time ago at Barnes & Noble. It's about a girl who was abused (all 4 ways by the way) from the time she was two, and have over 92 different personalities. I only started reading it, because when I was reading it my brother was reading a magazine out loud to himself out loud, and I couldn't concentrate, and when I asked him to knock it off, he just brushed it off and kept reading/mocked me, so I threw the book at him and havn't picked it up since. My mom read the whole thing though, and was very disturbed by the cruelty of the parents, etc. and wasn't sure if I should really be reading the book considering it's pretty graphic.
...I just thougt it was an intersting book, and couldn't really stop thinking about it recently when I come to PC |

Yes, I have seen the movie portrayed with Shelly Long on Lifetime. It was a very good movie although it did not tell as well as the book. I also have the book but have not been able to read it all. I have DID and I find it hard and sometimes disturbing. Shelly Long did a good job playing the part of Trudy Chase though.

i have read it. yes, the abuse is horrific and disturbing. What i find interesting is that most ppl read it to find the "disturbing" personalities. I have DID/MPD and i found her insights to bring clairity to my life on things i can't find words for. most of the book is highlighted for reference. sadly, my past T didn't want to see it. I haven't asked my current t. my past t was not pleased that i was reading it and kept asking "why do you do this to yourself"?. I have to assume she meant reading triggering material - but let's face it, therapy IS triggering. I've switched far more times in her office than reading the book.
I did have to skip some of the abuse info - it was too much for me and i did have some flashbacks. But i would hope that people will read it, and be shocked at the *abuse* - not the multiple personalities. It is not a monstrocity - it is survival. -narrator

Quotes from that Oprah interview:
When it started to come out, I thought I would go mad. Multiplicity keeps you sane under the worst conditions, but I actually though I was going crazy. Oprah: That's so interesting, and I say this with all respect, because you think this is sane? T.C.: Yeah. This is sane. This is sanity. I am sane. We are sane. Oprah: See, I think the idea of having 92 different people living inside of me would make me a little crazy. T.C.: Believe it or not, it's easy. It's easier to deal with than the abuse was. Dr. Phillips [Truddi's therapist]: It is. In fact, I really don't like calling it a dysfunction, because it's the most functional way to help a child survive. Thanks Perna for the link... I, too, often think I am going crazy, but all the T's I've had have said to me "You are far more normal than you have any right to be." Kiya
