Hi all,
I have a dog. I gave him a flea treatment (sargents or something I can by at walmart). A day after giving it to him. He wimpers and cries allot and looks at his butt, kinda like all the fleas are congregating there. He seems to be in allot of pain. Whats going on? Is this normal (the way they are killed).

Was it the drops for the top of his neck that you can buy at the grocery / pet store? If so, I would give him a bath right away. Animals can have very bad reactions to over the counter flea treatments. They can cause chemical burns. Give him a bath and wash it off.

The best thing for flea treatment is the drops that you get at the vet (frontline, advantix, im sure there are others too). I know they are pricey, but they really work and the fleas will be dead within 24 hours.

Right to what gem said.

Do you have a jack's there? i know they now give the frontline over the counter...at least they do for cats now.

I would give him a *cool* bath straight away. Also, they could be congregating there if it is a collar or another application that's just a repellent.

He could be having an allergic reaction to either the stuff used, or to the bites. My little yorkie was allergic to flea bites and we had to get him steroids by the vet a couple of times.

the good thing about using frontline is...it helps to get rid of fleas in house and yard as well because when they jump on animal, bite, they die. it's a good took in control of environment as well. help - Dog - Fleas - Treatments

Just wash it off quickly.

I had a cat get chemical burns all over his body and lose most of his hair from a hartz product. The vet didn't think he would survive but he did. I have stuck to frontline / advantix since. Apparently it doesn't hurt all animals, but it does harm a lot every year.

I used to use Advantage on my cats. The vets say the newest thing is "Revolution" because it treats more things than Advantage. Although the vet said it was the same price, when I bought it, it was more than Advantage was when I last bought that.

I did the same thing this past weekend...put Sergents Gold on my dog, and she rolled and rolled in the dirt, and continued to scratch, so i gave her a bath last night. She seems better today, but I'll get some Frontline tomorrow after work. I've used it in the past and it works!

Boy it's tick season, isn't it?

I have to bathe my dog the next day after he gets his tick bath, as he itches ALL over!

I wonder if by using anything... that the ticks dig in tighter trying to hang on, which makes the dogs more miserable???

For one thing, you can check the rear end of your dog & see if there are fleas there....you will be able to see all those little black things crawling through the fur....can't miss seeing them.

I have started using the Revolution which is applied to the back of the neck.....it is a systemic treatment for flees, ticks, & all other biting bugs. The systemic treatment goes into the blood system & the bugs somehow can tell & not bite. I used the revolution just before taking Leo back to KY & I gave it the perfect test. I have overgrown woods on my farm & he was with me most of the time.....never came up with a tick nor even 1 flea. I was completely impressed with that. The revolution product is supposed to be good for keeping the mosquitoes away that carry the heart worm....& since the moving to Kentucky...that has become an important part of my treatment for them. I was surprised that my vet in KY suggested only using Frontline + because is does nothing about the heartworm. I think is must also work for the chiggars because when I was eaten alive by them, he didn't have an itch....(I had over 50 bites one weekend & it made me sick).

The location in California I have been living (Mojave desert) doesn't have fleas which has been a blessing....only one year was I infested with fleas because I brought them back from my Mothers house...I had several older cats & then had a litter of white american eskimo puppies.....they all ended up with fleas. It was funny watching the fleas on the puppies however....they were easy to spot on the baby fur....but I couldn't use any flea treatment, so had to use mouthwash (anything with high alchohol content). The blue mouthwash turned them blue which was really funny to see....nothing like blue American Eskimo dogs.

Luckily as soon as I killed the fleas, they never came back & haven't had a problem since then.

I am lucky in the Leo didn't have a bad reaction to the Revolution or Frontline.....but I have 11 more doggies that will go onto the treatment before moving there & hope it works for all of them.....that is going to be an expensive addition to my monthly expenses, but it is worth it when it works so well.

I've read a little about revolution, but I haven't tried it yet mostly because my vet hasn't started carrying it and I'm in a rural area. I have been using frontline for fleas and ticks plus interceptor for heartworm, and it does the job. The all in one of revolution is appealing though.

I normally only use the frontline from mid spring through late fall because we don't have flea issues once it gets cold, but I treat with interceptor year round. There aren't mosquitos in the winter but interceptor prevents other worms too, and I take in a lot of fostors so I figure better safe than sorry. I have a foster now with awful roundworms that we are treating. The first day I got him he went to the bathroom and nothing but worms came out. I have never seen a case so bad in a grown dog. yuck!

Poor baby...that has to be really yucky to see something like that. The program you have your dogs on sounds like a good idea....may cut down on the cost if you can use something specific for worms year round & only the flea treatment when needed. I will have to look into the options. I have 12 dogs that I am going to need the treatments for once I get them all to Kentucky with me.....so that is quite a monthly expense keeping them all treated.

How wonderful you are fostoring doggies that need homes & get them healthy.
