How can someone with a degree, who was abused in childhood and later, who is committed to working on themselves, be without intelligence?

I often ask myself that, but then I realize that it's no lack of intelligence on my part-- it's easy to know the things that you are 'supposed' to do, but it doesn't mean you are always ready or able to put those things into action. Also, the unsconscious does not operate on intelligence-- when you are ready, things will happen.

I don't know specifically what degree you are referring to, but my T told me something very valuable once when I was talking about something similar to what you asked here... I am a grad student of clinical psych and he told me, "Remember-- you are not your own patient and just because you are in this field does not give you any more or less control than anyone else has of their emotions." It was a very powerful statement for me to hear.

Thanks pinksoil, that's the sort of reply I was hoping for! (without fully knowing that) ie something that makes me think. In a constructive way.

But hugs or any supportive replies are also welcome!!

There's all kinds of intelligences, Fuzzy. I remember how humiliated I was with a college degree, 2 college math classes, and I had to keep changing banks because I couldn't keep my checking account in order. I took "aptitude" tests from Johnson O'Connor http://www.jocrf.org/ and I'm really bad at "clerical" skills (has nothing to do with typing, filing, etc. which is good since that is what I did for a living at the time :-)

You have many many intelligences, Fuzzy, that can help you in this fight, not just "intelligence" -- don't think too narrowly!

Thanks Perna! I'm still trying to escape from a box that \a doctor tried to put me in. When things are bad I can still see his face sneearing at me and feel the wounds from his total lack of understanding. A GP yes, but they should have at least a basic understanding of people I would think.

I think HE was unintelligent. I'm not the only person who was wounded by him either. He has the most incredible knack of brushing people off and making THEM feel guilty for wasting his time. How?? How he is still a doctor I don't knw and it cant be only my fault cause I know of several others who've been hurt by him including someone who worked there.

I think that intelligence without the common sense & the sensitivity of how to use it is a sad thing. Many people have the book learning & the education but actually don't have the common sense of how to apply it in life & especially when they are interfacing with people. They can do so much harm.

Wow - Thanks pinksoil. I really needed to hear that one.

Fuzzy - You have a human intelligence that people like your old (I hope you don't see him anymore) doctor don't have. I think our struggles are part of what give us that gift. People who haven't suffered sometimes lack the ability to relate to others in a fully empathic way.

I'm not sure I understand the question. What is it that indicates the person is without intelligence? Maybe it is a mistaken perception?
