So I've been thinking about shaving my head lately to clean it up a bit. The hairdressers is not only costly but being confined to a chair with someone using scissors around my neck makes me feel very vulnerable and cautious of what I say. So shaving my head feels like a great alternative.

I did this rather recently and received compliments BUT the thing is, I'm 19 and I feel like there is a secret ageism associated with shaved heads. Am I missing out on hair-styling?? Or am I thinking too much into it?? Other men my age keep up with modern hairstyle trends which is fine but my mind isn't with that. It's just that when I go out in public, I feel like there's something missing. There's a huge weight lifted off my head.

So, basically, I'm wondering what people here think when they see a shaved head - if anything at all. Some people might not think anything. It's just giving me a little bit of social anxiety and I've struggled with agoraphobia so the last thing I want is feeling like I can't go outside or socialise because of something silly like a haircut. Is this not worth worrying about?? Should I shave it??

Personally, I like shaved heads.

I think shaved heads look cool on both guys and girls.

Hope you don't take this in a creepy way, but they can look sexy too.

So I don't think people will look at you weird or anything.

Haha, it's alright. I don't think that's creepy at all, I agree with you!

And I'd certainly hope not... It's just a hairstyle!!

I agree with Caelix. It’s cool. If I wouldn’t get so much grief, I feel like I would shave my head or at least take it down to Pink’s level. It would be so much easier to take care of. I also wish I didn’t care so much about what others think.

I say go for it.

Gosh, you and me both!

Yeah, the maintenance is also one of the reasons I'm going to shave it; the washing, the styling, the wind... Goodness, the wind. It blows it all over the place, lol. As you said, so much easier to just shave it! It does look good on both genders, perhaps sometime you could give it a go

Thanks for the reply, Jennifer I'm definitely gonna go for it.

I live in a colder winter climate & hair is insulation for tje wonter months here.

Im not fond of shaved heads...just my preference as others have theirs. Summer months & sun burn living on a farm & working out in the sun would require a hat anyway & probably easier than having to wash sweaty hear all the time.
For me as a woman, even ay my age I have long hair but pull it back & wear it up all the time. I personally like gray hair....that is my preference....as we ALL are different

Have you done it yet, since you made the decision? I try to enjoy the best of both worlds. I shave my head usually twice a year, and go to a hairdresser a few other times in the year. I like the way it looks on most people, male or female, and think it exudes a nice air of confidence.

There's your answer. Do what you like, personally, regardless of anyone else's opinion. I'm a girl, and I shaved my head a few years back. It was really fun. I've thought about doing it again sometime, but it's a drag taking so long to grow all my hair back to a long length.

Where I work there are a few guys that have shaved their heads and have very groomed beards. Looks awesome I think. I live out in the middle of no where, but I think it's kind of an in thing right now. I say, if you want to do it, go for it.

My hair is black and about mid back. Shaving my head is just strong wishful thinking. I don’t have the bone structure for it and my family would think it was a bad sign about my emotional health. I do like shaved heads on others though.

Thanks, all, for the encouragement and sharing your opinions!! I've gone ahead and shaved it, earlier today - my dad helped me clean it up a bit so I didn't have any strands. I'm liking it already. Everything feels a lot less heavy, haha.

Thanks, again, for the support, everyone

Some people suit a shaved head. It's worth giving it a try. I'm female and I'm the past I shaved my head a few times when depressed lol

Um, I'm going to be a sharp thorn here.

The answer for me depends entirely on how one presents themselves in general. A, forgive my bias, happy-co-lucky respectful person regardless of age can positively pull off the shaved head look. I actually find it quite physically attractive. However, absolutely unattractive is a head that has been shaved to send a statement. Take for example someone with a chip on their shoulder, axe to grind, or making an outrageous political statement. I am sure there are those who would agree with me about the latter.

So, do I think it is a good idea? That has entirely to do with your motivation behind it.

Both Sinead O Connor and Rose McGowan have shaved their heads in the name of their own political statements and they both look amazing. Stunning. As other posters have said; if it's something you want to do, go for it. ''It's just a hairstyle'', I've now come to realise.

As a male, I personally no longer see anything wrong with shaving my head, naturally. Or any other male shaving their head. TBH, IMO, there isn't anything wrong nor bad to shave a head, regardless of the 'message' behind it. Having done so, since posting, I say go for it to anyone considering it.

Exactly!! Having shaved my head since posting this thread, I'm already liking it and need to go back over it sometime soon, maybe tomorrow. A great decision, would definitely recommend!

Hey man it's good to hear that you like it. How do you keep it shaved? Do you use an electric shaver or something? And how often does it need to be done?

Helloo Ray, I do use an electric clipper but placed on the lowest grade so that it isn't shaved all the way down to my scalp, lol. Kinda like a buzz cut, not a skinhead. Or, if you want, you could take the grade off and shave it down to your skull and see if someone can go over it to deal with the areas you may have missed, it looks alright either way, in my opinion.

If it's left untamed, it'll grow out like a tooth brush. If you wait it out, it'll grow back to normal and you can get a crew cut or something but I try to shave mine every two weeks, no longer than three. If you're thinking about it, I definitely recommend!
Thanks for this!

I do the same but try to buzz it once a week. I used to have great hair but the receding gene had me reach a point I wasn't pleased with. In 2002 or so I had an ex-girlfriend cut it off...she got a 6 inch ponytail out of it.

I just can't abide with the rugstrip from ear to ear...my ego and some denial going on I suppose. It's all good...I'm told the shorn pate is a fine look. I do miss the mop but I have a photo or two in my files to get misty eyed over...*grin*

Get 'er done Ray! It's a little cool in winter that's all...summer is fine!

i've been told that i do have the perfect shaped skull for the buzz cut (or bald cut). i keep my head shaved for several reasons (not listed here).

note: everyone's skull shape and hair texture are different~!! how fast does YOUR hair grow? how soft is it as it grows out ? what does a bare scalp do to the shape of your face ? what's your motivation? (all good questions)

one thing i'll say for it,, it's CHEAP~!
