I'm very sensitive to light (the sun, computer's screen ... etc), sound (music), and background noise. I get irritated and overwhelmed easily by these things. I'm also very sensitive emotionally that I cannot handle people's slightest negative interactions with me.

((Some music is only sound ))

Understanding that you are sensitive is a mature thought.

Overwhelming sensations are a total bummer. When the radiator shakes and the refrigerator angrily purrs, like its not getting enough attention from me, and the wind gushes non-stop and my shades don't block out the sun the way I want them too, all that put together is overwhelming.

Sorry to say, but I have been there. And I can't help but to nudge that darn fridge every time, until it's in the right position and stops making that noise. But I sure do miss my houseplant. ((It didn't make any noise ))

I meant I'm sensitive to loud music. I like to listen to soothing music (wordless).

I shake the feeling, but it's irritating and overwhelming. In the case of the screen light, though, I cannot read and focus, even if I reduce the brightness. Especially the white background, is too much. I try to use other background colors, like grey, but if I go from grey to a white background, which is inevitable because many web pages use white backgrounds, the brightness would be 10x more than if I was using white background all the time.

I think this sensor sensitivity is correlated with my sensitive personality. The effect of my emotional sensitivity is something I have difficulty to control, which affects my life more than my sensory sensitivity.

Hi Aimless, I wonder if you are a highly sensitive person. I just heard about this a few years ago. People who are highly sensitive are affected by both external and emotional stimuli. Maybe check out this site: The Highly Sensitive Person

Maybe. This is something I read about a little in the past, and I felt it fits my emotional symptoms, but I'm not sure if it also explains the sensory sensitivity. I'll read more about it.

Me all the way. I'm super sensitive to sound, it sucks because someone I live with is hard of hearing and always turns everything way up. And I, as a past therapist put it, feel things very intensely. It causes a lot of stress and anxiety and just overall makes me exhausted. It all sucks really, but I can't imagine what it would be like to live any other way. -patpat- Although I can attribute some of that to PDDNOS I dunno...I don't wanna just say it's something you just have to deal with. I feel like that would imply you have to suffer through that on your own. But there's no magic cure for sensitivity. On the slightly brighter side you're not alone, people here understand. -hugs-

I'm so sorry you're struggling, Aimless Soul Have you talked to a doctor about this? Perhapshe could help you identify the cause of this extreme sensitivity to sounds. Do you think that could help? I'm so sorry you have to deal with this

I can totally relate to this. For me it's due to high functioning autism. I use earplugs or headphones at times to help me cope.

Me? I am super sensitive to sound and odours.

When it comes to sound, I am aware I hear differently than other people. It is a frequency thing. As such I don't hear everything. Music is particularly difficult. I don't hear lyrics but I hear mumbling that may or may not match the melody. Country music is extremely difficult to listen to as it actually makes me feel physically ill. I loathe it. I am very sensitive to constant droning sounds as well. At work I stand beneath a fan. After an eight hour shift I am absolutely frazzled.

As for smells, I find a great deal of them unpleasant. Some trigger disgust in me. The worst? It is absolutely awful when I smell disgusting stale smoke on heavy smokers. I can detect it from a large distance away. Fragrances can be difficult too.
