I am not sure if school counseling has been genuinely practiced on a high level in a high school setting. A school counselor has become more task oriented rather than student oriented. Is this type of service fair to our high school students quality time with their 4-year plans? or maybe schools are understaffed?

I guess the school counselors are there for academic purposes and for referring students with problems to psychiatrists, etc. I had a wonderful French teacher who noticed the symptoms of my OCD and told my counselor who recommended me to a therapist. Unfortunately, they did not diagnose my OCD and it went undetected until I was 25.

I had a wonderful counselor in high school that was there for me through a suicide attempt and the onset of my depression and trichtillomania.
Unfortunately I have heard that most people have had a bad experience with their counselors and in fact the other counselors in my high school were simply academic orientated. I think it is sad...high school is such a difficult time and having GOOD school counselors is so crucial to help students through the transition.
