I just wondered how common this is. I have two different charges that I can't identify. When I do an online search, there's a bunch of chatter about fraudulent charges.

Just wonderin

I've not had that happen with a credit card, I have had it happen with a phone bill. I did an online search also, found out it was called "cramming", and fortunately had a great phone customer service person help me out.

I see through a quick search that there is quite the issue with false credit card charges. If you talk with your credit company can you let us know how it goes? Whatever you learn will probably help many readers. Good luck with it all!

I thought most credit card companies were able to tell whether
unauthorised/fraudulent use of your credit card had occurred based on analysing past spending patterns including days/time of days etc that the card is used .

I did last year, Spring I think and called my credit card people. They have a whole "section" devoted to helping you/investigating such charges on your bill. If you can't identify it they'll research it and get proof it's yours or not. Someone got my number online and used it for a dating service :-) Too bad I've been happily married 18 years now. The next month there were more, different charges so the credit card company stopped that card and sent me a new one/number.

I buy mostly online (or local to where I live) and I've had my credit card company for a zillion years and they know me, etc. and my credit score is excellent so we have a good relationship together. I call them if I go out of town to let them know where I'm going and when I'll be back and my husband and I now use different cards so if one gets stolen or compromised we still have the other person's, etc.

My credit card company has cancelled my card and will reissue a new one. I've found this excellent site that discusses this criminal activity and even mentions my specific instance. Apparently it's unrelated to shopping on the internet. They have eBook websites set up to launder the money, which goes to Bulgaria and other Countries.

Glad everything worked out and thanks for letting us know the results. I wonder how many folks don't even notice false charges on their credit card statements.

Of course! Nearly every month. (Which is why you just have to check your statements!)

I checked a few months ago and it had thousands on one, in towns I hadn't been in... of course the credit card company was notified and began a fraud investigation, and credited me the amounts...

Immediately contact them (well, even if it's been a month or two) and talk to them. If it's something I might have charged but can't recall, they can send me a copy of the receipt, with signature etc, tell me what it was for...all that.

Often it's someone accidently typing the wrong account number (mine instead of the purchaser.)

What happens is that all different combinations of credit card numbers are tried with a small charge at first to see if the charge goes through. Then multiple charges.

For a real eye opener, check out http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r196...t-a-Cyber-Mule

The company that tried to rip me off was on there.

Also, be sure to say it's fraudulent, not to just dispute it, which you'll see recommended if you read the report.

Notice that these crooks have gotten the info from a high up source, because they have the 3 digit code from the back of the card. Also, it isn't related to buying on the net.

Cheers
