I feel like one of the recent psych med I was put on, is causing me to not be able to be creative anymore.

I like to creative write. Write fiction stories.

Now I feel blocked like I can't write anything anymore.

Has anyone else experienced this while on psych meds? For those who are creative in some way?

The recent psych med I am on is Lithium Carbonate ER 600 mg.

I believe I was more creative before meds.

I don't take anti-psychotics, but I have heard bipolar people say they can stop the highs and the creativity that comes with them. Have you talked to your doctor about it?

Oh, I don't have bipolar. My psychiatrist just prescribed me Lithium because he thought it might help my depression.

I am talking to him later today though. So I will bring it up.

I've noticed that since I've been on my current dose of seroquel, I can't write. I used to write a blog and journal daily, but I can't do those things now.

I journal daily. I noticed similar stuff when I was on too many meds. (I still am on too many meds in my opinion). Perhaps when I'm able to lower my dosages I can be more creative. Not sure though. It's kind of a tradeoff I guess.

So Sorry about what is happening. i agree with the other wise and wonderful posterst about talking about this with your own psychiatrist. i'd suggest to talk to him and perhaps see if there are some other meds that wouldn't interfere with your own creative side. i think it's worth bringing it up in my opinion at least. Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, @Creepeh, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!
Thanks for this!

I ended up talking to my psychiatrist.

Besides feeling writer's block I also felt like I couldn't enjoy anything.

So he said for me to go down to 300 mg for a week and then stop taking it.

I've been off and on meds for quite a few years now, and have had verious kinds of side effects, just like a lot of people, and I'm not surprised it's effecting you the way you described. After all these pills are interacting with the brain and the mind directly. Many possible side effects have been reported.

I'm not on any psych meds right now (waiting on a referral to a psychiatrist for first time), but I wanted to say I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I write fiction, too, and get blocks at times. Right now, I don't have the energy to write (or do much of anything) and I know how frustrating it gets. I hope you get it figured out soon.
Thanks for this!

I love this song, too. We used to sing it at the summer camp I went to as a child - those memories are amongst the best of my life.

In my experience, I had writer's block for ten years. All of my writing at the time was trash and I gave up. Once I started school, I had to build myself up...write essays...write essays with my own style...push the envelope, push the envelope...I had to put myself out there, and now I'm taking creative writing fiction and this is the first time I am writing fiction in ten years. I am so nervous because I don't know what I'm going to come up with.

Also, I didn't go straight into writing fiction either, I tried something entirely new for me--poetry. For the past six months I've churned out 40 poems, and I have NEVER written poetry before.

In essence, my "suggestions" are either take a break from it, push the envelope when you think you're ready, or try an entirely different medium than what you're used to writing.

I am taking 900mg lithium and 20mg zyprexa...

Creepeh, is the lower dose helping?

Thank goodness what I'm taking now doesn't seem to affect my writing ability.

I can feel some of my creativity coming back and the writer's block lifting.

On Tuesday I can stop taking the Lithium completely as the psychiatrist said. So I have that to look forward to.

I hope going off meds works out for you. I'm bipolar and I've been on various meds, including lithium and Seroquel. I never felt they blocked my creativity directly (I write, too, fiction and non-fiction) but I did feel kind of flat and unable to enjoy anything while on meds. I don't know if it was the meds or just the depression shining through. The major impediment to my creative writing has been the depression itself. It takes away my confidence and makes me second-guess every thought I try to put on paper, to the point that I don't get anything done because in my mind, every sentence I try to write sucks. I think it's more of a depression-induced self-esteem/motivation issue than a lack of ideas in my case. I'm getting ECT at the moment, so hopefully I'll soon be able to finally release all these pent up ideas that I've been collecting for over a year now!

I have bipolar disorder and have to be on some meds that definitely suppress my creativity - which is naturally strong. It's sad and frustrating. I hope you can fine a better alternative to the lithium.
