I feel a lot of love and care here, but I also hear a lot of complexity. I want to invite you read this story I heared about 15 years ago (and still is a big lesson), It was given to my college class in graduation day by PhD Dolores Webber:
I remember when I started studying Human Nature. I enjoyed camping and the views. The trees where beautiful, the river was clear, the mountains were nature wonders and the sky a gift from heaven. As I learned more about human development and pathology, etc. I found myself living my camping experiences a little different. The trees looked a little crooked to me, the river wasn't quite as clear or peaceful, the mountains where not nature wonders; they were uneven, and the sky either had too many clouds, or not enough. As I learned more about how complex life is, and all the things that go wrong, I definitely started thinking that the trees needed some serious trimming, the river carried polluted water, the mountains were a high risk factor in life and the sky was nothing but full of thunderstorms. I was missing all the beauty I used to see. I don't know when, or how it happened, but one day, I found myself enjoying the crooked trees and thinking they were beautiful, somehow the river seemed peaceful and clear again, even with its pollution, the mountains just seemed to complement the scenario, even if they were uneven, and they sky went back to being a little piece of heaven again. I think that is when I became a true psychologist. A human that accepts himself with his crooked branches and polluted water and risky mountains is healed. Be careful not to spend countless hours trying to streight the crooked branches. Instead, make the crooked branches work along with the river, and the mountains, and the sky. If the "whole" works well together, the crooked branches will become the "signature" and the "gift" of your patient. -;-;-;-;- Anyway, I just thought this was a good story to share. It is not only about accepting others, but perhaps, about self acceptance too. Lots of love to all of you. gab
