Since I will (hopefully--and good Lord I cannot believe I'm saying this) be going into therapy soon, I was just wondering what all of you consider the most important quality/qualities in a therapist, and especially in your RELATIONSHIP with your therapist. Reason being, I'm not sure I really like the lady I'm probably going to, and I know my parents aren't exactly her biggest fans. Still, I've only seen her twice, so maybe that's just a first impression gone awry.
So... any thoughts? many thanks, ~muse

Well it is important to like your therapist.... and to trust your therapist.
Different people have different needs. Some might need empathy and a softer, kinder person. Some might need or hope for a more aggressive therapist. There are also different kind of therapies. I am not sure how old you are but ... if your therapist is someone you like or wish to work with... it is your therapy ..not your parents. Therapy can go in many directions, sometimes working on your relationshihp with your family...inclusive or parents generally being on top of the list. |

Just read your bio.... teenage gal...
Good for you for getting help at this juncture. I always wish I had gone earlier in my life. Who do you feel emotionally manipulates you? Could that be your parents or peers? Your therapist should help you to find yourself and your desires and look at the manipulation.... pros/cons... realities. |

muse, there's another thread called "what makes a good therapist" that has a lot of good answer to your questions. I just bumped it for you. Here is the link:

I would say gage how you feel. You should feel comfortable enough to share what you need to. Although, try not to judge right away.
I wasn't sure I liked my T at first but now....I can't unlike him...giggle.
